Anyone know of an alternative 12-step/ AA program for people who don’t believe in god or simply don’t want to do steps have anything to do with religion/spirituality?

There is a thing called SMART recovery, but I can’t say I know much about it. Btw I’m staunchly agnostic and am 12 step. Couldn’t be happier for it, but that is just my personal exp

There’s AA Agnostica which has the steps with no mention of god or hidden hope you’ll “come to you senses”. You can google it to find the website.

I am an Atheist and I am in AA. 4 months sober this past Wednesday. The higher power of the steps need not be a deity. I tried several other programs and they did not work for me. I’m happy to chat offline if you want.

I'm with EY1. I replace God with higher power and the steps have worked great for me. Just over 12 years. I also encourage you to find a sponsor who believes like you do. You can do this!

Sober 8 years, got started in AA/CA/NA, agnostic/atheist. Never had an issue with that in 12 step.

Hey! A fellow AA, agnostic and in Cyber! Congrats on 8 years. I’m at 4 months

I’m anti-religion and had a serious hatred of God when I went back to AA after a 14 year relapse. I get it, totally. I am not trying to change your mind. I am stating this before I tell you that I tried everything and gave in to giving AA another try. I still roll my eyes (internally) when hearing some shares by “the church folk”, tossing in the blah blah blah. I just leave it, and have found other meetings more my style. I’ve erased a lot of what I typed so I’ll just say, I know you won’t believe anything you don’t want to and although you have to find out for yourself I thought I’d share my experience and where I landed 8 1/2 years ago after believing that death was a simpler action. I’m glad I didn’t. If you’d like to DM me, or chat reach out. I’m happy to answer any questions you have.

For me the alternative is jails, institutions, or death.

You could try refuge recovery/recovery dharma. They’re more Buddhist or meditation focused

Lol. Didn't see that you had already posted this... Do you attend?

You should look into SMART Recovery! It’s rooted in cognitive behavioral therapy and I found that it is the best alternative to AA. They have virtual and in-person meetings.

The Catholic Church is the first on my list of resentments so I get it. I think the important thing is you find a way to take that fearless moral inventory of yourself, with rigorous honesty, and that revealed for me the reasons why I drank so much. So what ever process takes you there, go for it! Joining this thread to see what else is out there myself. Good luck OP

Does any of this describe your current feelings?

- Religion is for the weak and/or foolish
- Religion is filled with hypocrites
- Religion causes more harm than good
- Religion, spirituality, God, “bearded man in the sky”, etc. are all the same thing and I want nothing to do with any of it
- What has God or whoever done for me?
- I believe in science, not mystical voodoo
- Church is boring and the Bible is filled with nonsense
- I would rather cut off my pinky toe than become religious

If so, then you are just like I was. I’m happy to report that I still have all my toes and that I’ve been sober in AA for over 4 years now. I’m also no more religious today than I was when I first walked in.

I do however, have a new definition of “spirituality” and it’s one that works for me.

There’s a chapter in the book called “We Agnostics” that forced me to ask myself some tough questions, and when the alternative is the recurring living nightmare hell that was my life after my weekly weekend binge blackouts, or being just open-minded enough to go to AA meetings and keep coming back, I figured I’d just give it a shot. The crazy part is, it just kept workin’, and it keeps paying dividends (so long as I take the steps and do what’s suggested of me).

uplifting

I had to close my eyes to say the Lord’s Prayer when I first got sober otherwise I was afraid I’d start laughing…whoops! Haha

In Utah, where I live now (vs Texas before), they actually don’t say it at any of the meetings I go to.

I did however, read a book by Emmitt Fox called “Sermon on the Mount: The Key to Success in Life” that changed my whole paradigm on this stuff.

A quick Google brought up a link to what appears to be the full pdf of the book! https://www.prestongroup.org/aa_docs/Sermon_On_The_Mount_eBook.pdf

There is also Recovery Dharma and Refuge Recovery, they're both Buddhist paths to recovery. Pm me if you'd like to know more.

Thanks for posting this sounds interesting

My higher power was my cat when I first got sober. Just anything outside yourself. I am not a fan of organized religion but eventually came to believe in my spiritual higher power that I refer to as "y'all." It's not singular or plural or masculine or feminine. Or it's all of the above. Basically, you can make your higher power fit your belief system (or lack thereof)

I’ve got about 20 years cross channel experience in marketing, split between big brands and startups, and I’m considering pivoting into a data science/data analyst role. I know it will initially be a step back in comp but is it at all realistic for a person with certificate level experience in data analysis but a decent marketing management background to expect $150-200k comp or is that mostly for degreed candidates (or not realistic at all)? Any guidance here is greatly appreciated.

Additional Posts in Addiction & Sobriety

I’ve already had cervical cancer (last year) and have been cancer free. Now have a hormone replacement specialist I have to see annually. Yesterday was the visit and she randomly decided to do a breast exam and found a lump. Couldn’t get me in for a diagnostic mammogram until next week. Came home and relapsed - it was not a full-on bender but I drank. How do I not beat myself up and just get up and keep going? Alcohol is the WORST thing for any cancer esp breast cancer. WTF is wrong with me!?

Went for a pre-employment drug test yesterday. They never asked me if I was on any medications. I had to ask them and was told "oh yeah, just put any you may think make a difference in this text box." I put Xanax, Flexeril, and gabapentin. All of which are prescribed and used as directed. Now I'm terrified that I should have put ALL my meds, to including my psych meds. I've been sober over 12 years and never touched drugs (just booze) but I'm having a full blown panic attack.

I’ve been sober a year now, and someone recently reached out to me about not drinking. When I suggested AA, he said ‘washed out people with nothing to lose’ wouldn’t comfort him. And that it was a ‘scared straight’ approach. I know his is a super harsh and ignorant opinion, but I just want to say if you hold it, it’s so far from the truth. Regardless of age, I’ve met some of the coolest unique people I’ve ever come across in aa, and I just felt sad people might hold that opinion of it in 2021

I have no family and my only friends are bar flies. (Cunning, baffling, powerful).

My husband is an alcoholic and it’s getting worse with the holidays. He’s started every day drinking high alcohol-content IPAs as early as 8am. And he drinks them all day and all night like soda. He did AA when he was younger but is now vehemently against it. He is high-functioning. Has a PhD from MIT and works for a venture capitalist firm. I wondered how he gets through the day, but he started to come home early (mid-afternoon) and immediately open a beer while working. What should I do?

So I wanted to share my experience and see if it helps anyone else out there. I was not an alcoholic, but I was definitely alcohol abusive. I would go out and drink and then be completely blacked out and not remember anything. I would also do and say stupid things that just made no sense and I even got in trouble with the law a few times.

One day, my friend and I after a few day bender decided to take some LSD because we were hung over and just wanted to not drink and chill. (Cont.)

I am so scared he is going to enter college life and become addicted to things after being curious. We have talked about it many times, but teenagers think they know everything and are invincible. I have told him there is a 50% chance he got the addiction gene and he needs to be careful. When I went to college I partied and tried it all, but I got lucky not getting addicted. Any advice?

My first holiday season sober. This is really hard. Don't like having to turn down invites to events I know I would be tempted to have a drink at. Having to tell people not to gift me nice bottles (something I loved for years) because I'm sober, the whole thing honestly just makes me feel lonely and frustrated. Don't relish having to explain it to family at Christmas either. This sucks!

Posting for anyone who may be just “looking at this page” or “sick and tired of being sick and tired”. I found a life through sobriety. It may not be perfect but I no longer HAVE to drink. I never thought it was possible. I wanted to state here that it is. It gets easier as time goes but if you’re fed up know that for many years I HAD to drink. I could not function without it. 24 hours was a miracle to me. If you’re like me you’re reading this and thinking “Bullshit!”. Just try 24 at a time.

It’s been 6 months since I’ve last had a cigarette. The process was pretty seem-less, with no cravings. However, this past has been especially difficult. My sister came to visit and she’s a smoker, she really needed a cigarette while driving, now since I caught whiff of the smoke, this past week has been my worst with cravings. Tips to cope, so far— I chew gum to help.
