Anyone leave the big 4 to work for a smaller, less well known consulting firm? If so, did you like it and what were the pros and cons? Thinking of making a move, but weighing my options. Thanks!

I went to Riveron. Pay, bonus, people, life - everything is better than big4. Only 300 person shop.

I only see the value of doing this for a lot more money, better WLB, or a better role. If any or all of these apply, go for it! Deloitte always welcomes people back if you were a high performer

A lot of the local firms I have talked to wouldn’t match or even exceed my base salary for the same level. So I’ve been resisting making the move because I’d rather get some sort of pay bump and then better WLB. I think only having 5 years experience hurts me because they base pay purely off of number of years of work experience

I am currently interviewing with a smaller firm too. It's model is a "mini slalom" and I wouldn't be traveling anymore. Ironically, they have more clients in my area then my current big firm does, at least in my service line

Don’t do it! Smaller firms can’t demand as high of rates but have to pay their people comparable to Big 4 so margins are tighter. The result is underscoping work and poorer benefits leading to shitty WLB. The only possible time it would make sense is if you don’t care about WLB and just want to make partner faster than at Big 4, especially D.

Hi Tax Bowlers, I'm an experienced associate (2yrs) in a Big 4 Transfer Pricing division. I have reached a point in my career where I am considering taking up a professional certification. Several colleagues recommended taking up either ACCA or CFA, however, I see little connection between these certifications and the work that I am currently doing, and what I plan to do in the future. What would you guys suggest? Would it be detrimental to my career if I did not take up any certifications?

Controversial take: someone suggested to me that some of the Big 4 are just using Covid as an excuse to fire people they wanted to before but did not want to go through the hassle or hurt reputation. So as long as Covid continues, they will keep firing people and not raising salaries even if they can afford to. What do you think?
