Anyone make the jump from small consulting firm to big 4? Any regrets in doing so?

No regrets. Just trade offs. There is alot of extra bureaucracy and red tape to get things done. So many levels of approval needed to get anything done. So if in the past if you were cool with your partner you could ask and get something. Now they might not have approval and need to go through the channels On the flip side you have more resources. More people to reach out too, more to learn, etc. I'd you're going to one of the auditors there's independence issues where you and your spouse can't own certain stock. You may or may not get more money.

I sorta did way back in the day--went from a ~400 person firm to Deloitte.I wasn't all that much of a fan. I went from working pretty closely with the VP of my firm who ran all engagements for the eastern half of the US to being literally just a number on a spreadsheet at D. Zero alignment with my goals and skills in my first couple of engagements at D, but did have a couple of great engagements. I was downleveled at D and took a pretty big step back in the level of responsibilities for the first 1.5 years or so before being able to get back to a comparable level as to what I'd been doing for years at the smaller firm. Higher comp upside at D and theoretically more opportunities to grow my career, but that was about it. Everything else was pretty much a downgrade from my previous role and directly contributed to me leaving D after a few years.

Yes and no regrets. Helped me with my career growth.

Yes and no regrets. You work long hours regardless of the size of the firm. It’s just the nature of the industry. I was a actually expecting it to be Somewhat harder but I think it is just as hard. Hard pace, hard core, relentless.

Why limit yourself to the Big 4 if you're looking to move to a larger consulting firm?

SC1 Fair question—wasn’t really looking to move, but a recruiter reached out to me and piqued my interest. I’ve generally been pretty happy at my current firm which is what has me hesitant to make a jump...I’ve got a great work/life balance but this move would come with a huge boost to my total compensation.

I make more but I work more

Yeah same plus I had to sell a bunch of Apple stock for independence reasons

Hi Tax Bowlers, I'm an experienced associate (2yrs) in a Big 4 Transfer Pricing division. I have reached a point in my career where I am considering taking up a professional certification. Several colleagues recommended taking up either ACCA or CFA, however, I see little connection between these certifications and the work that I am currently doing, and what I plan to do in the future. What would you guys suggest? Would it be detrimental to my career if I did not take up any certifications?

Working as an audit staff in big 4 shared service centre. It's been 2 years. I really don't like what I do there, also it seems I won't like what I'll be doing there even after becoming senior. Thinking of leaving and joining industry once ACCA qualified. (One more paper left). But people around me discourage that growth potential and earnings in industry are way less compared to public accounting. I know that too but I still want to leave. I'd like to stick to core accounting. Thoughts pls

I’m thinking of quitting breastfeeding. My baby is 5 months old, and my pump just broke, and I don’t think she’s eating enough and she wakes up all the time at night hungry. I’m just tired of it. I’d rather just give her bottles and call it a day. Ready for my husband to take the night feeds, ready to be able to have a drink without worrying about when I have to feed the baby. The actual breastfeeding has been easy, which is why I feel guilty for “quitting.”
