You should try BDO. Same resources and pay as big 4 with less hours and more flexibility
RIP resources
RIP charge card and not having to worry about CPEs but Hello to increased flexibility, no calls / emails in the evenings and weekends
I've worked for a regional firm my whole career so I can't compare to Big 4. I can tell you that I never worry about CPE (you might, if you go to a shitty firm) and I usually work between 50-60 hours a week during busy season. I still have stress, and get calls on nights and weekends. The upside is that I get experience in EVERYTHING, on a much smaller scale - running the job from start to finish including drafting the financials. The audit teams are usually about 3 people, plus manager and partner. The audits usually last 1 to 6 weeks. The downside is if you're looking to move to industry, a lot of big companies want big 4. I think the key is to go to a reputable firm that is a thought leader in a specific industry.
It's kind of like going from MLB to the minor leagues but the pay is still good relatively for PA
My buddy went from KPMG to RSM McGladery and said while the miscellaneous nonsense perks might not be as good he is significantly less stressed.
I enjoyed my time at a smaller national firm a little more than my Big 4 experience. I feel significantly more utilized for sure and more pressure.
Are exit opportunities significantly worse?
Yep, like the culture and work much more. Just depends on firm and who you will be working with, do your due diligence.
