Accenture to slalom has been such a welcome culture shock! I’m actually treated like a person, not a resource, and encouraged to grow

I joined as a consultant from Accenture. Have been promoted 3 times in 7 years. Currently making comparable total comp to my MD peers at Accenture. MDs as stated above vary but most that I meet are good people who really care about building a sustainable business. FYI, MD at Accenture is not equivalent to MD at Slalom. Accenture MD is a wide range that is comparable to Director, Senior Director, and Managing Director at Slalom.

Did my time at Accenture. Enjoyed my time there but ultimately burned out. Did some time in industry and ultimately got bored. Now at Slalom, and 6 years in - best place I’ve worked. Every office culture is a bit different, but ours is very strong and full of wonderful people and strong leaders who genuinely work hard to do the right thing. Work has been interesting, better work life balance (although still consulting, and expectations to contribute internally). Promotion process can be challenging for people who aren’t comfortable advocating for themselves and driving their own career, but tons of opportunity for those that are.

Similar here. I started early career at PwC where the progression path was pretty clear - serve your time, and if you don’t mess up, you get promoted. Easy (this was a while ago so surely it could have changed). Then industry, then Slalom, before which I had never learned to define goals and advocate for myself because I didn’t have to. So I spent a few years at Slalom patiently waiting for people to notice how great I was and just hand me career growth (side note: I was not nearly as great as I thought I was). I got frustrated when that didn’t happen, but eventually got myself sorted out.

Came from EY. The people at Slalom are so sincerely kind. It reminds me of how EY was when I started there before all the backbiting became the norm.

I know several folks who have come over from AB4, and one who headed back to D If you’re looking to get off the road, we’re a good option to explore

I think it also depends on market.. my office is like, 60% ex Accenture, 30% ex big 4, 10% other.

Can you specify your office location?

A SM moved from Accenture to Slalom Phil and I would say he struggled to adopt to the culture. Too many escalations against him but he is still there.

Why? Performance issues?

You like staff aug? I'd boomerang back if I wasn't done with consulting.

What practice areas (if any) would be a natural move for a mid-level commercial real estate/finance associate? I started trying to leave my firm in February and, at the time, was super in-demand. Now, with Covid, commercial real estate is slow & I think I'll be stuck where I am for at least another year if I don't make a practice area shift. Are there any other practice areas where my experience would be valuable?

I currently work for Accenture and I work with lots of people from different time zones both contractors and employees on my project. I’m willing to seek other firms that may give me flexibility on working and living in Asia for few months so I can be near my family and then come back.
