Anyone move from lit in regional mid-size firm (300+ lawyers) to big law? I like my firm but am increasingly feeling a desire to practice complex national lit in a larger market. We get interesting commercial cases but not the high stakes sophisticated/complex lit that goes to larger firms. Am I making too much of this? And do the downsides of big law outweigh these benefits? For additional context, I am fine with my comp and my hours are around 2200. And assuming that I could get in, of course.

If the work you’re doing is unsatisfying, you should definitely explore moving. Just know what you’re getting yourself into

If you’re already billing 2200 and would like to work on more complex matters, I would try and move to biglaw. Some places your hours and the firm culture will be worse, but 2200 should be more than fine a lot of places too. Now that you have some experience, you should be a much more eligible candidate even if you didn’t have the credentials coming out of school.

I did it as a JD+8 partner who tries commercial cases. Got everything I wanted. But the talent pool in a V25 is vastly deeper than in a regional firm, the politics are more complex, and the demands are much greater.

Depends on the firm. Some have much stronger cultures than others. But many have become pretty mercenary in recent years. I was at one V25 that had a great culture until a change in management. Within a few years it became a shark tank. You learn how to fight the fights but it gets tiresome always wondering whose fingerprints are on the knives stuck in your back. Pay a lot of attention to partner attrition. Ask about faith in firm leadership. Look carefully at the composition of the executive committee. Really do your diligence. There are some good places left but their number is declining.

First time poster here!

After spending 4 years as a mid-level ops manager, I tried to break into HR through talent acquisition. Now after 6 years in TA, I've had a hard time getting out of it. My goal was always to get into a more broad HRBP position, but I've since worked for smaller orgs without a solid HR career path. When I ask about my career goals, they keep telling me, "Soon!" Or "Maybe in 6 months!"

I'm testing SPHR in June. Any advice for securing the type of role I'm aiming for?

My firm is really great. Mid sized regional firm. People are great, work is great. But I’m a junior and there are zero mid levels in my specific office. I’m questioning if I am getting the proper training as other juniors at other firms. The pay is good for a firm of this size with its presence, but feel like someone with my level of experience should be trying to get the proper training in order to succeed as I progress. Thoughts on what to do? I’m comfortable, but thinking about of the future

Decision - I was out the door of my nationwide ins dfense firm. Was going to top local firm with a lot more clout where everything would be private pay and I’d be more on bigger exposure cases. However, my firm outmatched the new firm, made a much better bonus structure, and said I could do more work with their complex bus lit group. I’d still likely do about 50 percent ins defense but I really like the partners I work for, and I handle own cases/take depos, and get autonomy. Am I right to stay?
