I didn’t move there as an expat, but I grew up there. What’s bad is the pay and the tax rate. Also consider that unless you give up your green card/US citizenship, you will pay US taxes on top of Australian taxes.
The cost of living is high and if you go out to eat and drink, the alcohol poured is strictly measured (vs. the free pours in bars and restaurants here).
What’s good is that Sydney itself is a beautiful city with a TON of things to see and do. The people are generally pretty easy going and friendly and the weather is great.
Despite the bad and the ugly, if you could do it for a couple of years I would go for it for sure.
There is a tax treaty. You file both yes buts it’s not like you are taxed both. Oz tax is > US federal tax… don’t have to google far to find it out. Generally your company should employ someone for you for taxes, for at least the first or two.
I would wait until the Covid stuff dies down a little more first. The restrictions there can be suffocating, even with a pass.
I lived in Sydney for awhile, absolutely loved it but the weather can be a killer. It's a beautiful city, tons to do, lots of great food and I really liked the people. I just didn't like how isolated it was/what a hassle it was to travel outside of Aus so that kind of diminished it for me. I do think the cost of living is high...but where is it not haha. Honestly, I would take the opp if you have it, it's a cool experience!
