Anyone moved from an partnership track to staff attorney position in BigLaw before? I’m considering it because I don’t even think I can keep up with an Of Counsel level of billables but I don’t want to leave law completely.

Anecdotally I know of two associates who went from partner track to part time staff attorney roles. One loves it (strictly adheres to 1600 billable year target for reduced pay + bonus for extra hours, V10 firm) and the other is in the process of lateraling so hasn't started her arrangement yet. Seems like firms are more receptive to it than they used to be. Some folks seem to attach a stigma to it, but I think it's an awesome option and if executed properly is a good opportunity to accommodate changing work/lifestyles.

Why wouldnt you go PT instead of staff?

Just want to chime in and say that is a crazy requirement. Are other firms that way? My firm just updated their PT policy, but it’s a no-questions-asked policy. I just went down to 75% and it’s amazing—no prior billable requirement. I’m sure your firm would rather keep you part time than lose you. Do you have a partner you trust that you can talk to about it? TBH, not meeting billable can be good evidence that you need to drop down.

I was a staff attorney at the beginning of my career. My circumstances were different (and was expected to work associate hours for lower pay), but I found it impossible to get a firm to hire me in a partnership path associate position when I tried lateraling. If you’re sure this is what you want to do long term, go for it. If it’s because you’re feeling burnt out, try going part time for a little while. Once you go to a staff attorney position it will be much harder to get back on partner track later (assuming the market does not stay the way it currently is).

Second this! That staff attorney title is a death nail. Don’t do it!

A quick note about what I’ve experienced, in my decade long career, is the real advantage of MBB or FAANG - it gives you a shot at stretch roles that are outside your expertise. Not all the time or even most of the time compared to better candidates with specific experience for the role but gives you this wildcard shot at a vast array of opportunities.

What would you choose? MBB (Digital practice) or Amazon PMT? MBB comes with FT offer, Amazon PMT will most likely result in return offer. If I go with MBB, I plan to exit to big Tech in 2-3 years. Y1 TC for both will be quite similar (around 230k). Thank you in advance!

How did you get into your area of law? I have been licensed for 5 years and I still don't know where I ultimately want to be. I started as a line attorney and after 3 years, I moved to a non-litigation position working for the state. I feel lost. I have thought about getting MBA to compliment my JD. I was a good litigator but I had trouble turning off my brain and being present with my family when I was a litigator, so I don't think I would want to go back.
