Anyone moved from core tax to M&A as a manager (internal transfer, to other big 4, etc)? I know the things they do are completely different, I wonder if it’s even possible to move as a manager?

Don't take offense if they suggest coming is as a senior instead. As already mentioned, it's much more technical and there's a big learning curve. I was a high performing senior in core compliance, passing up early mgr promo and bonuses to move to m&a. Came into the group with a blank slate, fully accepting that I was the bottom of the totem pole and need to just sit there and soak it all in

Agree with this. Take the hit to the promotion and start as a senior. It’s a difficult transition from core to M&A (I did it as a senior 1) and I can’t imagine doing it as a manager.

Can one of you please explain 5 common things you do in M&A? I want to move to M&A starting 2022 January so want to be fully prepared by then. M2 here.

All of the above look right to me.

I transferred as an experienced senior (and gave up a promotion in the process), but I know people who switched as managers. It’s a pretty tough change to be honest. M&A work is much more technical than core tax, so there’s a huge learning curve that’s made worse when you need to review an associate or senior’s work who most likely knows more than you. The managers I know who tried to switch eventually transferred back to core tax.

No, NYM

I’ll echo the above. I’ve seen tax or even audit people move straight into manager position for M&A and it’s rough. Nobody is happy from associate to senior associate level all the way through director. It’s just a big learning curve plus being expected to perform as a manager would

Agree with what everyone said. Almost everyone that transferred in as manager/SM didn’t last more than 6 months. The ones who did well were those who were willing to look at the big picture and defer promotion a year or two.

Agree with all of the above. On the upside you get to do a lot of cool work.
