One of the dumbest things you could do right now. If anything, you should up your contributions.

Everyone here who is saying that they won’t retire for another few decades so aren’t moving their funds around are exactly right! In the 2008 crisis, I did the same thing. I just held on and kept investing (actually increased my contributions). I came out in the other end with a very successful portfolio. The market rises over time. The 401k is a long term investment. Just stick with your plans and ride this out!

like

No, I can’t withdraw from it for at least 30 more years so why worry about the market is doing now?

like

I’m not retiring for another 40ish years so I’m keeping mine in. It’ll go up again.

like

Well unless you moved it when all this first started, you’re cashing out at a low point. Which is dumb, especially if you’re going to wait until everything stabilizes to get back into the market. You’re literally buying high and selling low.

Thing is, unless you’re invested in a bunch of VC funds, the odds of who you are invested in imploding over this are really slim. Will they take a hit? Yeah. Will your 401k drop? Sure. But it will come back if you leave your money there. It come come back if you take your losses.

Also, don’t go to cash. We’re in the midst of a medical crisis, invest in the medical industry. And the second the virus craze passes, move it back (don’t hang around for the inevitable law suits to hit).

like

No way. If you’re anywhere under 35 leave it where it’s at. It’ll come back

Have not yet, thereby having non-seller’s remorse. Thinking about bond funds

I see what everyone is saying but I think moving funds to a cash fund would be a good idea. I thought about doing it and called the plan administration on last Friday but chickened out. I have lost another 6 to 8 percent since then and it is a downhill from now. I am still thinking that I should move and once the economy tanks then move back again.
People who took hit back in 2009, it took 5 to years or so to get back where they were before recession. If they had moved funds, they would have made good return in their accounts.

Haha how will you know when to get back in?

My uncle moved all of his to cash last week and this week he was diagnosed with terminal bladder cancer. Life is crazy.

The market may go down, but the market always goes up.

My 401k is up 7% this calendar year. Moved into bonds at the right time.

Tax/Withholding question:
I make ~100k, my work withholds about 20% on my base, and over 30%whenever I get a bonus (actually)
My wife makes about 150k, her work withholds 27% on her base, and over 35% on her bonuses (bi-weekly)
Standard deductions, we live in NJ.

Is this normal, should we adjust any withholdings? What would our refund (if any) look like?

Any and all advice is appreciated—thanks!!

Generally curious how many companies offer phone reimbursement? My last gig did not but the current one does. Legally it seems, all employers are required to do so if we use our phone in literally any capacity (video call, slack, teams, emails etc). How prevalent is the issue of not reimbursing phone dues?

I’m a 23M, $60K comp, 0 debt, live in FL. I currently contribute enough in 401K to get the company match and max out my Roth IRA. I’m open to buying a house if I see a good deal/one I like, but not dead set on it. Should I cutback on my IRA contributions to save up for a downpayment, or should I max out my IRA and take out the contributions if I see a house I like? Basically, I’m asking what’s worse, not contributing to Roth IRA or taking money out of it for a home purchase?
