My fiancé and I bought a house together so we have already combined - we have a joint checking account where we both deposit enough to cover shared expenses (mortgage, utilities, pet care, car insurance, groceries, etc) and the remainder of our paychecks each goes into our individual accounts. We’ve talked about putting more in once we’re married too (I.e. currently we take turns paying for date nights and don’t put money for like vacation savings or other savings in our joint) but I think at least while we’re both working and making roughly equal we’ll continue to put at least some of our paychecks in our individual accounts

like

Practically speaking we set it up so our direct deposit handles what money goes where, and we got a new credit card together for joint expenses

We put the same percentage of our salary into a joint account and adjusted the percentage to find a sweet spot.

like

Why don’t you totally combine your finances? I am not disagreeing, I just want to hear the perspectives/reasons.

I guess we could, just like feeling that I have my own account to spend on trips to visit friends that he doesn’t have to pay for, or gifts for him that could be a surprise

like

We have separate checking and then each have our own credit cards. We have one joint credit card we put all our joint expenses and then just pay half the bill each. We also have a joint savings we contribute to for trips and other random big expenses like house stuff

We will have one shared checking and savings account / credit card and keep our individual accounts too. We’ve decided on what % of our income we’ll put into the shared (it’s like 60-70% each) and the rest will go to our individual accounts. We also reviewed 401k plans and took into consideration husband will be going into my health insurance. We’ll move our shared expenses (rent, bills, household expenses) to being paid from shared account. We have goals for home buying so will be transferring an equal amount of money to our savings account and to kick it off. Keeping our own accounts allows us to spend our own money on something nice if we want, whether that’s clothing, a new bike, guitar, etc. I expect over time we’ll fully combine, once we buy houses and cars and maybe kids. But this works for us getting started.
