How do you deal with managers or directors younger than you who don’t have strong leadership qualities due to lack of experience? I’m in my mid-thirties and the director of product is mid-twenties. They rose through the ranks as the startup grew so they really know the product and company but they don’t have a lot of experience managing a team. It’s frustrating to have someone lead without having the skills to lead or the insight to give industry or career advice. How have others handled it?

I once said “my partner so-and-so” then cringed at what that sounded like and backtracked, “I mean, a partner at my firm …” — do you say “my colleague”?
