Anyone sign a prenup? Pros vs Cons experienced and was it worth it. Wife to be makes 1/2 salary as me but is 3 years younger and a hard worker.

OP, i am not much older then you but already have close to 1mm before inheritance which will be significantly higher. Now more importantly, Is your fiancé attractive? Goes to the gym and eats well? Can you give me her burner. I am ok with no prenup tell her.

Typically, unless you already have significant assets going into the marriage (I.e. millions) then there’s not much of a point. Agreements on future income don’t hold up well in court, and it could put strain on the relationship.

like

If you’re already thinking of these things (half salary, hard worker), you likely do need a prenup!

How old are you? Is this your first marriage? Do you plan on having kids? Do you have significantly more wealth? Double her salary does not count as having significantly more wealth. Even if something did happen 10 years down the road, if you guys have kids, she would probably deserve half of everything for the sacrifices she will inevitably make as the mother of your children. I think a pre-nup is only necessary when it’s a 2nd or 3rd marriage with kids from prior relationships, or you have multi millions. Or if you don’t really love her. Which in that case, don’t get married.

First of all, all the people saying “if you’re thinking of a prenup then you have problems already” are full of it. This isn’t about love, this is about protection. It’s like insurance, if you don’t use it, great. If you do need it, you have it. You can’t predict the future and shit happens, people change. Protect yourself! P2 I got a prenup and set up a trust because my dad has a small trust with his house and some money that I’ll inherit. Trusts function as their own entity (imagine it being another person) so when my dad passes, my trust will inherit his trust and I can access it. What I do with that money after being married matters - for example, if I take that money and commingle it in a joint account with my husband, now that money is ours together and cannot be separated to only me during a divorce. Talk to a lawyer, it’s money well spent.

I’m a F 🐠 and I would want a prenup even if I made less. It protects me too. And you guys can write whatever you want in it.

My wife (the breadwinner) and I have a prenup. We made it very simple: if we split, we get the assets we had at the beginning of the marriage. Everything else after is shared. We also waived the right to alimony.

D4, it’s all flowers and butterflies when you first get together. I’ve been married over 30 years. Infatuation wanes, love is always there but you can’t assume things remain the same in perpetuity. Should at least consider that the Cinderella phase may pass and you are stuck with the result of previously bad decisions based on heart-fluttering love which eventually turned to - meh. Still love, but can easily turn into “holy crap” on a bad day.

like

As others have mentioned prenups are pretty useless unless one of you has substantial assets, income won’t really matter

like

What if we both know we will each get large inheritances eventually, but don’t have many assets at the moment?

like

Sounds like you're fairly evenly split as to earning potential. It really depends on the assets you each bring in and whether it's a community property state, etc. My wife is a teacher, earning potential about 25% of my salary. Neither of us brought assets. We opted against a prenup and now my wife is staying home with our two kids, and I'm focused on local clients. No regrets, but ymmv, as I know this industry ruins marriages.

BCG 1 gets it. Marriage is gonna have its highs and lows. Building in an escape hatch is something you do when you are ready to bail, not hold on and work through your issues

like

OP, you don’t love her. Otherwise you wouldn’t even think ‘that the timeline of the two could open me up’. That’s a really sad little statement. You should let her go.

like

Get a prenup. It’ll also protect you if you ever start your own business or inherit a bunch of debt from someone or whatever. Makes sure you’re not both liable.

I believe prenups can protect those situations P2. Definitely talk to a lawyer though as I think there are some considerations involved as to how the inheritance is used down the line

I am 27 and she is 24. Assets aren't too high (150k and 60k respectively) and no house. However as P2 eluded to, we both come from families of means, and I will be coming into around 1MM of inheritance within the next 5 years and she will come into 1-2MM in the next 10-15. My concern is that the timeline of the two could open me up; I do fully trust her but the logical part of my brain keeps whispering prenup.

Prenup, at least from the agreement to not have alimony. It’s one thing to say “we will split everything 50/50, but quite another to say “I will give you a chunk of my salary forever”.
