On morning workout days I wake up early enough that I can check email for anything critical - literally just sending “confirm receipt, will [next step] by [time].” Then I’m out the door at 6.30 for a class at 7.
Bag packed before, class has a $10 cancellation fee — I’m not getting charged money over my inability to maintain a boundary!
Home and showered by 8.30 means I’ve got the endorphin buzz to focus on deep work
That's so healthy good on you!!!
YES. This combined with the fact that I’m not a happy morning workout person means I go right to my computer and start working (after coffee of course) and then POOF it’s 7pm and I’m too tired to exercise. I’m hoping people on this thread have advice.
I had a partner who told me she didn’t look at her phone until after her AM workout which I guess could be an option. (Seemed unrealistic to me.)
I eventually learned to not stress out about work everyday. If I drop the ball because I didn’t answer an email at 730am, then fire me I guess.
I only respond to emails at 9-930, after lunch, and after work. Sometimes I’ll read them, but I won’t respond to them. I’ll even workout in the middle of the day sometimes before responding to emails that I’ve read. Life is too short.
Smart.
Ooh yes! And it’s sad bc I love morning workouts and see the benefit ( so good for anxiety better than 3 cups of coffee who would think 👹)
. Honestly I had to get better at finishing thinks in the afternoon or get a head start on things on the weekend. Also to do list helps for the next day so your not in your head in the morning and know exactly what you need to do . Secondly prioritize - does that email reallly need to go out at 8 am or can it wait till 9 am. Or just look at your inbox see what you have to do but don’t necessarily do it ( look at feedback and come back and do it… honesty I’ve found I am the most creative in my head when I’m doing something active or like showering it’s gives my brain a way to think literally outside of my desk/laptop box)
Lastly, preparation! Have everything charged, outfits out, bag packed.
Oh and I also started doing lighter and quicker workouts ( 30 min strength in the morning vs 1.5 workout)
Yes! Also honestly to see results mentally or physically four excessive is sufficient is great! It’s actually made me more consistent at the gym and got me out of the all or nothing mindset.
Also in the evenings if you want to get more cardio in you can go for a walk or something light like yoga
Focus on you. You should always be your top priority, and if you don’t have your physical or mental health you won’t perform as well at work.
I understand this on paper but emotions take over - 'what ifs' play in head.
I need to be job hunting, the morning hours are so valuable for this but feel like I'm prioritizing exercising over this.
I don’t get out of bed until 8:58 am to be ready at 9 to logon for first call…. I don’t feel the struggle
Keep the cam off until you are ready
Maybe get a personal training sesh once a week, when you’re paying $100, you’ll be incentivize to get up and go and put work on pause. After a month or so of doing this the. Try to squeeze in some non-PT morning workouts since those may almost feel habitual
thanks, good ideas on building the habit first.
I started just getting up earlier and earlier. I love it and treasure the hours before others are awake

Don’t look at your phone or give yourself time and timebox it if you do. As others have said, you have to prioritize your health.
I’m up at 5:30 to give myself plenty of time to workout and relax before the work day. I’m up early so there aren’t distractions.
Why do you work late in the evenings? If you are out by 5 sharp you can get a workout in and still fall asleep by midnight. And even get good 8 hours in of sleep.
Health > Your employer
family related things in the evening - taking care of young kids and aging parents needs
I struggled with this as well, I ended up getting up a bit earlier so that my workout would be done before 7:30-8am and found that before 8 there would rarely be any major items to look at
I usually check my email when I wake up, see that nothing is emergent, go workout, then tend to it when I log on. I think recognizing what barring an emergency, whatever it is can wait until 9/930. Just have a mental checklist in your head of what you need to do when you log on
My best motivation was prepaying for a trainer. The possibility of loosing $90ish /session was motivation enough to go and stay focused. But not everyone has the same motivators.
I always check but unless screamingly urgent I do my scheduled work out. If it is that urgent, I do it, then work out.
No, I wake up early for 5:30 am classes and I’m so tired, my phone is the last thing on my
mind. I’m usually rushing out the door.
I highly recommend choosing a morning practice that supports your well-being holistically.
Checking on some device first thing in the morning is certain to produce anxiety.
Your morning experience sets the stage for your experience throughout the day.
You will sustain your best work performance consistently by taking excellent care of yourself. Nothing should supercede this, do not sacrifice it in favor of prompt responses to emails.
Do not allow a device to decide on your behalf how your day begins. Choose.
Emails aren't going anywhere. Enjoy your workout!
