Anyone successfully take their mat leave in two parts? I get 16 weeks and considering doing 10/6 or 12/4 a few months apart to be available for busy season and get to spend time with baby when he’s more active. Primary fears are not being ready or being able to take the rest of leave after returning.

I think you need at least 12 weeks to recover fully and build back some physical strength (as well as drop down to only 1 or 2 night feeds - we didn’t manage to fully sleep train my son until 16 weeks). But if you want to save up to 4 weeks of leave for later, that’s a fair plan.

like

But also consider if you’re serious about wanting to breastfeed. Pumping while working long hours sucks on so many levels.

My 2nd is 3 months and I’m taking 4 months. I could go back now, but I appreciate being with them a little longer before they go to daycare. I think daycare is wonderful, but I think being a little more mobile (even just laying on their tummy and looking at toys or being able to sit in a bouncer) makes me feel better about them doing some limited “entertaining” themselves while the daycare workers look after other kids. Also, coming back just to be available for busy season sounds rough! I also think the time later could be viewed more negatively. I doubt anyone would say anything but they’ve probably think of it as a vacation more than mat leave. Not saying that’s right, but just a hunch.

Why are you thinking about being available for busy season? Your time is your time and others can cover your work. Nothing anyone does isn’t replaceable or doable by another person. Will it be done as well as you do it… maybe not but it’ll still get done. You’ll only get those first 4 months one time with this baby.

like

Fair enough. More considering if it’d be beneficial to have that time when baby is more interactive at 6mo or if I actually need 16 weeks to heal and be ready to work again

like

I did, for busy season since it was promotion year. Still passed up for promotion. I’d recommend taking it upfront. I was tired, still healing, and not sleeping at all because the baby was still waking up 2-3 hrs during the night.

like

Baby is unlikely to sleep through the night fully and regularly before 16weeks so personally I would take all 16 upfront

like

This is one area where I would definitely differ between birthing parents and non birthing parents. So much healing and hormone balancing needed. Like others have said, i wouldnt purposely put yourself into an added stress situation (busy season). You'll already have enough going in as you adjust.

like

I definitely understand the desire to be there when the babies a little older and more active and fun. But I would just plan to take PTO for two weeks later on For the reasons stated above

like

I was thinking of doing this too and was advised to take in one go. Aprt from reasons stated above, I was told that taking time off twice creates unspoken resentment, they need to plan twice for replacement.

Interesting, thanks!

We have our baby in our room (and will probably have him until he’s a year old) and I don’t feel like doing it when the baby’s beside us. Looking to hear what you ladies have done to keep it alive!!!
