Anyone that has recently or ever been to Road To Hana in Maui, what’s an ideal time to start in the day to pretty much cover all the spots, do a few small hikes on the way, relax at some beaches etc.

Honestly as early as possible. Even if you feel comfortable on the curvy narrow roads keep in mind that some people go incredibly slow or have to stop and back up to let other cars through as some of the turns only allow one car at a time, so it can potentially get pretty backed up. Haven’t been since pre-Covid so that might be different now but the earlier, the better.

I went as early as the car rental would let me pickup the car. And I made it all the way to the red sand beach

If you can, try to stay the night in Hana. That way you will have plenty of time to stop along the way and explore the area near there the next day

We left our hotel around 5:30-6 am and started the beginning of the road around 6:30-7 am by the time we got there. Best decision ever. Hardly saw anyone, had all the waterfalls to ourselves. We also did the full loop and went around the backside which we loved. I’d recommend downloading a $5-10 app that guides you on where to stop along the way and provides good narration/history. I think ours was “Shaka Mike” or something like that. Have fun!

Agree!! We used one that played different stories based on our geo-location. Also told us which stops were worth it and which to skip.

We started at noon and that was a hilariously bad choice. Made it maybe 1/3 of the way there with some stops. I'd start as early in the day as you feel comfortable, probably setting out from the first town around 8 am?

Omg same ahahahaa. And we spent too much time in Paia.

My friend and I rented a car and did the road to Hana right away but didn't stop. Instead we stayed the night in Hana and then went backwards. We had an entire beach to ourselves in the morning and then barely had any people around until mid afternoon.

Yes get the Maui Gypsy Guide HIGHLY recommended by SM1. It is best possible way to cover road to hana otherwise you'll exhaust yourself by stopping at random locations just because more tourists are there.

We started at 7 am and covered until the VERY end. In fact we started doing pipiwai trail (this is way beyond Hana) we realized that it's getting late and we should head back...

While we were on the way back driving late evening the roads were complex and stressful. All curves you admired during the day became treacherous with limited light.

Enjoy yourself and carry towels and an extra pair of clothes.

You mean the road to divorce? 😋

Early early early! Also download the road to Hana Shaka app, made the drive 100x more interesting and helpful
