I think it depends on the person. When I handle training, I always ask the person first “do you learn better in person or is virtual preferred” then go from there. I also think it MIGHT make a difference having cameras on if virtual versus not. Quite frankly not everyone is able to just sit and participate in training without being side tracked and it helps kinda keep an eye on the person’s attention level too. However I’m also the person who never cuts my camera on 😂 I pay attention though lol
I would suggest if there is no other option that Zoom/Teams, pause when needed and take a minute where you can to make sure they understand what you went over and have good notes. I also was my trainings with a general recap and then check in with the person the first couple months during the transition.
The new person has the manual but her job duties include a lot of paper filings (to counties that don’t have electronic filing), mail, checks, etc. She’ll call me to ask how to mail out stuff and to process incoming mail. It’s hard when I can’t see what she’s doing. The mail room is a few from her computer so zoom isn’t an option. She told me she’s struggling asked the office manager for me to drive up, the manager said no.
I’m sorry to hear about your struggle. Try a zoom call with her and share your screen like one of the commenters suggested. I trained 2 legal assistants in 2020 via zoom and it went well, and they ended up doing very well in the roles and moved up. Also don’t let the stress affect your productivity or relationship with management. It’s just going to be a recipe for blaming you. Focus on what are responsible for and reach out and help others when time allows. If you could meet up with her (halfway) on a weekend, for example, that may also help, but that depends on how bad she needs help and how far you’re willing to go to help her. With way, she’ll forever be grateful!
This maybe a stretch but since you both are virtual can she commute to where you live? Or meet half way to a workspace. Can your firm pay for a wework space or similar? (Probably not open to it). This way you both will be physically present and would part ways until she is ready. Another suggestion would be to use FaceTime to be present with her. Get a selfie stick with a stand so you both look over each other. Sorry to read that your firm is not supporting you, it’s very negligent on their part. I sympathize with her since she just started and wants to do her job correctly. You may have to make a sacrifice to help her, but this is an issue you need to address review time unless you move to another firm which is more team oriented.
I switched firms during WFH and was trained on zoom. I actually didn’t mind it, my supervisor sharing her screen was really helpful a lot of the time whereas when being in person it’s a lot harder to sit two people in front of one screen, etc.
I totally can commiserate with office managers making life difficult though! I’m sorry you’re feeling like you want to leave
Do you have the training materials? If not, ask them to email you the materials before the training sessions. Reviewing them before hand may help you. I’ve been WFH for nearly 4 years now, two different jobs, and I was trained via Zoom/Teams. (Well, not quite trained, but watched/listened to presentations. I’d just rather read the ppt than having someone read it to me for hours.) Tell your manager/trainer what works for you.
I'd rather train online. Share your screen with her to teach her how to do things.
Schedule a block of time to do it virtually, and literally share screens with each other. Also I find it helpful to have *.pdfs prepared as instructions with screen captures.
I have shared my screen with her already and she is still very confused….I spent hours with her on Teams and she seems so overwhelmed….
We both work in offices just in different states. We’re not virtual. I work in KY and she is in OH, but I used to do her job. It’s sad because my office manager has already given some “due todays.” And it has scared her. She always does that to me, but I’ve been here for a while and know how to handle it. She’s scared she’s going to get fired because she’s not properly trained.
I see that is a rough situation. The pressure is really on her to understand the job. You’ve done your best. I’ve trained other analysts. Most get it and roll with it, while others keep making mistakes.
This is a rough situation. My firm has checklists for each type of task, they are a great reference tool and I still use them 18+ months in. Are you in an office in your location or fully remote? Maybe you can show her stuff like mail on FaceTime from the mailroom in your office (if applicable/possible).
I’ve suggested FaceTime but she doesn’t have an iPhone, she has an Android….I feel bad because she is really is trying! I just hate that our office manager is already hounding her with “due todays.” I’m in office in my location. And she has all my notes. I emailed them to her.
FaceTime recently had an update where you can send a link to a non-iPhone user, super useful!! Just open FaceTime app, there should be a thing at the top that says “create link”
