I’ve heard these flip sides from international friends in these general buckets: Europe: pretty chill but if you wanna make big bucks/climb career wise, USA is king Asia: work more hours, be treated worse, make less pay that USA counterparts

Yes, I was referring to consulting and IB. if you’re going for industry, these are great countries to work in (except for salary reasons lol)

If you can work a shift without any interruption or small talk, Germany. They’re pretty good about shutting things down after the days over

Fwiw, I was at PwC in France (the pinacle of the good life, supposedly!) and the hours were insane...no work-life balance to speak of

The pay was also very low (think 38k euro for a starting analyst, before tax). But good vacation days and free health care...it’s all a trade-off

As an American who transferred to the UK, you see pay go down for the same work, WLB noticeably goes up, and the GBPUSD rate moving up + lower cost of living do help make up some of the salary difference. Ultimately, it’s the intangibles that you want in life - experiences, the people you want to meet or surround yourself with, the life you want to lead, where you want to live, etc - that make or break moving abroad feeling like the right decision for you.

Where would you move to?

Can confirm that the culture working with people from the Montreal area is 100x better than the US and they get way more vacation time. Met a lot of folks from Canada over a year working there and it’s now on my radar.

The work culture in the US varies by location. What office are you in? Might make a difference getting out of a major city if you’re somewhere like that

I’ve also heard that West coast is slightly more relaxed too.

During the VMAs last night there was a car commercial and all I have to say is that if your brand is picking a 5 year old Sia song that didn’t even chart too well as a song for a NEW commercial, you need to tap into culture a little bit. I’m begging for a world where we stop using songs like this and Roar by Katy Perry as the standard backing tracks for boring ads.

Our industry needs to change the way it does recruiting. We make it impossible for people to apply directly to agencies. Relying on employee referrals gets good "culture fits" at the cost of diversity
