Anyone transition from big law to midsize as a mid-level and realize you actually know less than your colleagues? I’ve done more substantive real work at the midsize than I did at my last 4 years in big law…I’m shook and don’t feel knowledge is up to par with my class year. FWIW I do commercial real estate/corporate finance

I can’t speak specifically to your practice area but yea big law litigators don’t know sh*t about f*ck 🤣. Mid size and small firms require you to take on more responsibility early on. Big law is a big check to be a grunt. I don’t think it’s the worst deal tbh.

I didn’t see that last sentence coming😂

I relate to this but from the opposite end. I started off at a midsize firm and went to a big law firm as a fifth year. I was shocked at how little my fellow fifth years knew about my area of practice and how little litigation experience they had. They practically fell over when I explained I had been taking and defending depositions for years and making my own court experiences. There were a lot of raised eyebrows during the interviews from the partners too lol.

I had the same experience. I went from a specialized boutique firm to a big law firm. I ran more sophisticated transactional deals at the boutique.

As a 4th year in CRE, you should be close to understanding all of the parts of a deal, and have mastery over due diligence items, closing docs, closing process, and lender requirements. Having a strong understanding of purchase agreement issues and how they will likely unfold and be resolved is also expected, but being able to negotiate them yourself would be a bonus. My sense of you are likely being harder on yourself than you need to be.

From what I’ve seen as a clerk, I’m usually not impressed by the big law firms when they appear in court

I left big law as a fifth year to go to a lit boutique so that I could actually learn stuff. I returned to big law shortly after and was amazed at how confident and how much more capable i was than my peers. There are partners at my old firm that have fewer skills or experience than mid size or small firm litigators because they do nothing from their quasi ivory towers.
