Separate the terms...
Traditional = Pre-tax
Roth = Post tax
401k = Employer-sponsored retirement account
IRA = Personal investment retirement account
There are four different possible combos from those terms.
The tax preference (Roth/trad) is all situational based on your circumstances.
The type of account (401k/IRA) is where the bigger differences lie. Just research that alone, without Roth as a term.
If you're looking for a simple investment option, there are usually target funds based on your retirement date as an option. Those are managed to keep the stock vs. bond balance appropriate so that you'll be stock-heavy (riskier and more growth-oriented) while you're young, and bond-heavy (more stable) when you get close to retirement.
It’s a Roth option offered through your employer, so you would have the contribution matching benefits and the higher limit of the regular 401(k)
That’s right. It’s one of the options when you pick your your contribution amounts and allocation.
