Anyone use the Unique Curriculum? Last year was my first time using it and would love to hear your thoughts.

I teach 9-12 life skills. I like the reading lessons but not fond of math. Next year I will have the transition band, so I am looking forward to using that.

Yes, I have been using it for 3 years in a HS Mild Cognitive impairment Program. Our district uses it K-12. . It is a great foundation and guide for planning but it has weaknesses such as not aligned well with Michigan Standards or alternate assessments as these are at the functional level. In addition it leaves out important functional concepts. For example, the only measurement lesson is a basic cooking recipe. This leave out concepts in linear measurement, capacity, fraction using addition, subtraction etc.I use it daily to guide me so I don’t get off track but I provide lots of supplemental work in addition to each lesson. It also is very generic and repetitive, same lessons month after month with just the theme or word substitution. Example, same math problem with addition counting school supplies, next month same problem counting camping supplies.
Hope this helps!

I have used it for years in my AS class. It works well for my students as it uses Pictures for my non-verbal learners and it is repetitive each month so they learn what to expect. I use it as a replacement curriculum for math and reading so I can pick and chose what works best for my learners. I am also required to use at least two assessments for an IEP so I like their assessments for some of my learners to use in addition to the VB-Mapp. The ability to use if with a smart board is also nice

It's not my favorite as an early elementary sped teacher. I don't think it has enough content to truly teach foundational reading and math skills...it's not explicit enough

I keep hearing great things but we piloted it and it was awful. I don't know if my district just got a crappy package or what.

takes some practice....start smalland build on whats works for you and your kids!

It’s ok. I prefer to use it supplementally instead of as my core curriculum.

I love, love, love it! I have been using it for
6 years now and my partner teacher and I wrote a proposal to get it for all moderate-to-severe teachers in our district. After a year, it was Board Adopted. I love the themes and how it correlates directly to Common Core. My students are engaged and love the topics. They are learning age-appropriate concepts at their own level. I’ll be honest, when I first saw some of the topics that would be covered I had doubts that my students would be able to access it, but they have surpassed my expectations. I also love the data collection component. I utilize the
Benchmarks and monthly assessments to help drive instruction.

No first time hearing of it. How did you like?

it is overwhelming, but I like most parts of it. Math not so much.

It was overwhelming, but I liked it. Looking for suggestions on how to use it better.

Good luck!

Has anyone ever done voluntary layoffs/terms for staff members? We've recently restructured and we know that has fundamentally changed the organization a lot of folks joined. We want to give them the option if they would like to self-select out we will help with an exit package/financial assistance. Has anyone ever implemented something like this? If so, how did it go? Anything we should be mindful of? I'm chatting with our lawyers but would love your perspectives. Thank you!

Thinking about looking for another SPED teaching job after being at the same school for 12 years. I don't feel appreciated at all. My question is......will another county in the same state honor my tenure and salary that I already have at this job? How do I go about politely asking future employers this question and still get hired?

I need advice. I teach a Co-Taught class, I’m the Gen-Ed teacher, but my background is Special Ed. My Co-Teacher refuses to teach-(I don’t mean Direct Instruction). She sits in the back of the room and is always on her laptop. She acts as my assistant. My IRR students are failing because she doesn’t support them except near grade posting she tries to negotiate with me to help them pass, suggesting to give them work from her small group class. She only gets up when Admin comes in the room.

My husband and I are considering relocating to the Carolinas and I was curious if anyone can give me information about how special education services are typically provided in your state. Do you primarily push in to the classrooms or do you pull students out to individualize their programs? At my school here in Wyoming, my paras work with students in the classroom and I pull individual students and small groups into my room throughout the day to work on their specific IEP Goals.

I am officially titled as the BD teacher but some of my students also cross over into other areas. I have one student who is self contained purely for behavioral need, not academic. He’s currently injured enough people that I’m about out of paras who feel safe enough to work with him. When he goes south it takes quite a few people unfortunately. Have any of you ever ended up in the situation where you are the only one left? How do you keep the balance with the rest? I can’t teach only one daily.

I am a sped teacher in a high school. Autism Spectrum Disorders are not my area of expertise and I need someone who can help me with behavioural and academic interventions. He has a low average verbal composite and FSIQ on the WISC-5 but after that is very low to extremely low in composite scores for visual spatial, fluid reasoning, processing speed and working memory. The student is duel diagnosed and has a specific learning disability. I am running out of space. See next box.

Just curious if any special ed teachers here have experience teaching general education as well. How does it compare in terms of the work load? Which did you prefer and why? This is my 10th year of teaching learning support and I feel burnt out from all the IEP related paperwork. I'm wondering if moving to general education might allow me to find more work/life balance.
