Contentious case. Parents each have the same amount of parenting time / visitation. Question is when the schedule changes and decreases frequency of exchanges. I send opposing counsel my client’s proposal and the response is “I won’t budge.” Thinking that’s odd (“I” instead of “my client” or the like), I respond that opposing counsel has an obligation to take it to the client, and immediately get “this isn’t productive. Next communication better be a signed agreement by your client.”

Quick vent, would love input: I’m an attorney working for a state-wide nonprofit. I’ve been crushing it this year and have been very successful in obtaining favorable divorce and custody orders. An OC (who is generally a terrible attny) just filed a bar complaint b/c I requested attorney fees, arguing they shouldn’t be allowed b/c I work for a nonprofit. The fee request is warranted & allowable. My manager thinks it’s a compliment, but I’m anxious. Thoughts?

How does everyone bill for family law matters? Do you always bill hourly or is there some flat fee, monthly or quarterly fee structure that could work, even in contested matters? I have cases that the clients end up spending $20-$40,000 on a contested divorce and this is really out of their budget. I feel that if my firm could charge a flat fee of $10-$15,000, it would still be beneficial from a client predictability and volume standpoint and would generate more referrals.

Anyone ever deal with an opposing counsel so obnoxious and tedious that every time you read their correspondence you just want to do a good ol' primal scream?

I have a client in Barbados who's married to an Australian, who was recently divorced.
She advises that the order for dissolution was made 17 September, 2021.
She advises that they own joint property, and have a 6 year old child.
The client will need to make an application in Australia for Contact and Property Settlement.
At this stage, the client does not have resources to pay an attorney, and we're trying to facilitate contact with an attorney on the legal aid panel or an attorney who will ac
