Just came back from Tokyo, I used points at the Prince Sakura in Tokyo (because it was cheaper in points than most). I was a bit worried it might be too far out, but we were right next to the train station got to all our desired destinations quickly without issue and had a awesome visit, hotel staff and hotel were nice, will stay there again my next visit.
Also did Prince Sakura tower in Tokyo and highly recommend it. Great value for your points.
Stayed in the St Regis in Osaka and loved it. One of the best hotels I’ve ever stayed in.
Prince Sakura is a great hotel. I also stayed many weeks at the Tokyo Marriott but preferred Sakura for location (walkable to many things, fun neighborhood a few blocks away) and for Marriott upgrades. My wife also preferred it when she came over for visits. It is in a very good location for transport. Shinagawa Station is a major station with many local JR lines, Yamanote (green line) and Shinkansen service to get to Kyoto. (Only few stops from Tokyo station too). The airport limo bus goes to the hotel too as well as the N’EX train.
In Tokyo we did a lot of stuff locally and via Viator and they picked up at hotel for tours or you meet at hamamatsucho which is like 2 stops on Yamanote line.
Just left the Suiran in Kyoto. A little bit out of the way from central Kyoto but the hotel is breathtaking. Recommend
Just back from Ritz Carlton Kyoto using points. Omg it was amazing ! So worth it! But I can guarantee any hotel in Japan would be great! The service is impeccable and they don’t ask for tips!! The Ritz Kyoto is in downtown so pretty convenient to go anywhere.
i’ve stayed at the prince sakura tokyo and the ritz-carlton osaka. both are excellent.
the ritz in osaka is a particularly stunning value at 50k points/night (prior to SPG merger) and has 4 restaurants, including a michelin-starred french restaurant. they honored my status with an upgrade and the room was immaculate, with an incredible view of the city.
for 35-40k points/night (pre-merger) the prince sakura is a great hotel with the nicest concierge lounge i’ve been to from a food and beverage standpoint. you don’t even need to eat breakfast or dinner anywhere else. just eat there for free. they have a very nice gym for a hotel, and also they have some next level massage chairs that give you 20+ minute massages and stretch you. also they have a nice traditional japanese garden courtyard that makes for some good photo ops.
i haven’t stayed at the ritz-carlton in kyoto, but my understanding is that it’s supposed to be one of the nicest hotels in the world. if you have an unlimited points budget, it would definitely be worth checking out.
Did Kyoto Ritz last year, my wife still talks about it.
