Anyone volunteer for iMentor before? Thoughts about the program overall, commitment, impact?

I did 4 years with a student in NYC and recommend the program to people. There's a lot of structure and support. They follow a curriculum that's integrated as an elective in the student's regular academic schedule and your once a week email exchange reinforces the topics covered. (There's also flexibility if you find you don't need the prompts.) Beyond that, the commitment is one in-person, evening meeting at the school per month that the program coordinates. iMentor also hosts events to meet and mingle with other participants.

Some drawbacks I saw, but didn't experience personally, were

1) that your mileage might vary depending on how open students are to your mentorship and that not everyone isn't open to hanging out or talking beyond outside the minimum communications,

2) underserved schools are not always central to Manhattan and may require a bit of a trek,

3) the program is focused on preparing students to apply to college, but there is a large range in academic preparedness and motivation, so some of the mentors who attended Ivy League-level schools have to level set their expectations,

4) they only do same-sex matches so they always need more male mentors and the backlog for female mentors is potentially longer,

5) the program is tied to the academic year so it might be hard to just jump in at any point of the year unless you replace a mentor or fill a gap, so it's best to apply earlier if possible

Wow thanks for the insight @M1!

I had a very tough time with my travel schedule. I missed out on all the events and had to meet on Fridays for one on one lunch. I really liked the program, but I would make sure your schedule aligns

It's a great program but I think I just didn't get a good hand. I started traveling halfway through the program and could only meet for lunch / after school on Fridays or on the weekends. My mentee was pretty pissed off with the whole situation so it ended pretty poorly.

Hi all! To qualify for an L1A visa, do you have to be a senior manager / executive level or does it work as long as you’re a manager? I just moved out of the US because the H1b lottery didn’t work out for me, and I’m thinking rather than spending 1 or 2 years in my home country and go back as a senior, I’d much rather work here a bit longer, get that manager title, wait a year, and then go back as I think that would be the fastest route to green card..? Any thoughts/advice? I’m from 🇰🇷 :) TYI!!

I'm 11kg overweight for my height with a BMI of around 28.5. I'm hiking, walking up various peaks and ensuring that I get my heart racing the past 3 days.
