Anyone who has switched from corporate to litigation during your first year in big law - how did you do it? Did you move to another firm or you were able to switch practice groups within your firm? Did you ever regret your decision? What made you make the switch?

I try to never get in discovery disputes unless I am very confident of legal position- state court judges hate that stuff

Partners who were highly technical in their past. Were there any skills, thought processes or behaviours you had to gain or lose to get to where you are today?

Perhaps an odd question, but I've recently moved into a technical career track. I perform well and have a great career sponsor who has asked me to think bigger about my career goals. I've noticed my social skills and way of thinking are shifting towards stereotypical Engineer. Less social, less big picture thinking.

I work in a state where abortion was previously banned and is now still pretty heavily restricted. Lately I've heard a lot of really negative and hurtful comments about patients who are picking up contraceptives, and about people who are pro-choice. I don't usually bring my political views to work, and now I feel like I honestly can't say anything without making work really uncomfortable for myself (I'm pro-choice). What should I do?

I know this has been talked about before.. but what was being an associate like in the before times on nights / weekends? Did everyone have home offices anyways and get work all hours of the day still or have to go back into the office at odd hours?Like you would just be out on a Saturday and then have to rush to the office if you got work..or does this happen more with WFH because everyone assumes you’re home (still basically shut down in Canada) and have all the tools you need to do the work?

I need out of M&A. I like the people, I like the work, I even like most of the clients, but my health can’t take the fire drills.

Currently on on a day where I literally got back from A&E and I’m probably going to work overnight on a closing (and no, it’s neither the partners’ nor clients’ fault, this is government dictated). We have resource but nobody with enough deal knowledge so it’s two people trying to get everything out while two first years wait on our instructions but can’t do much.

I sent from my work email a follow-up email to two people at another firm who I interviewed with. I sent from my iPhone and for some reason iPhone auto populated my work email instead of personal (even though I had previously only used personal to communicate with the other firm). I immediately realized the mistake (after double checking the sent box of personal and then the sent box of work email), and “recalled” and double deleted the message in outlook. Will employer likely see the email?

I’ve asked for work but no luck. I know they say this is normal for a stub but when should I start getting worried and consider looking for exit options? Fyi, I like my practice group, so I don’t want to change to a different group within my firm, hence would have to lateral, if I have to. Also, other co-1st years are churning in high hours.

I’m a midlevel tax attorney at a well-respected Amlaw 200 firm. I received two offers (one from a V10 and other from a V50), and was wondering whether I should jump ship. I like my group, the relative work-life balance and the occasional sophisticated tax work, but I don’t think I’ll be marketable in a couple of years due to seniority. I’m hesitant to leave behind the goodwill, but I’m also drawn to the prestige and more money (my firm is slightly below market).

I need advice…. a partner is moving my time to non-billable codes rather than writing it off. He’s doing it to make his numbers look good when fees exceed the quoted fee cap. He is doing it without first giving me a guide on how much time to record and is sending my work without amends (ie my work is good). In my firm billable hours recorded go towards performance, promotions and bonuses. Write offs and realisation are not part of those assessments.
