OP - Sorry to hear that - hope situation is not too serious. Apologies I have not been through the experience but my 2 cents:
1. When I researched prior to buying I found that there are strong regulations in place and a record of favorable decisions in such scenarios (even eg. Slipping in bath tub).
2. In case the insurer is not playing ball, you can reach out to the Insurance regulator of the state where it is registered (most likely Indiana since most Insurers register there)
3. Would advise keeping meticulous records of bills to back up claim. Probably a no brainer but it can get overwhelming managing a paper trail and tying to your claim.
4. Also you must have seen that your plan lays out in great detail the limits (e.g. room rates per day, pharma allowance caps etc.) so would be good if you ensure that your claims aligns with these policy details.
If you have HSA, I think this is a qualified expense. Something to consider if you have tough time getting claims processed by visitor insurance.
HSA can only be used for yourself and anyone you claim as dependent in the current tax year. Can’t use for others even if they are family members.
Thanks A1- that’s helpful.
But would love to speak with someone who has experience in dealing with insurance people buy for parents such as plans from insubuy.
Analyst1, I believe HSA can only be used to pay for medical expenses of those that are covered in the insurance plan that the HSA falls under. At least, technically speaking
I bought it when my folks visited for 5 months. Some people don’t realize that this is qualitatively differently from regular insurance we get from our employers (and end up cribbing on forums) So this isn’t helpful for situations caused by pre existing conditions (eg. heart disease, diabetes etc). This is valuable primarily for “disaster” scenarios(e.g. trauma caused by accidents). Won’t get much support for doctors visits etc.
Hi M1 - I am looking at a trauma situation. Do you have experience in making claims against a trauma situation?
