Anyone who hopped to / decided to turn down startup (Series A/B stage) willing to share your thought process and what helped you pull the trigger?

Very torn as I’ll be taking a over 40% paycut for equity and having to relocate, but I am really interested in the industry and their business model

A few things come to mind:

1. If you are asking this you may not be feeling as excited as you should or could be about the company and its long-term appreciation potential.

2. I took a paycut to join a tiny fund because I believe in it long term. No regrets. I believe in what we are doing and in the GPs I am supporting. And I believed in attaching my career to their successes and failures.

3. Have you been able to benchmark whether you are being lowballed in title/pay?

For me, those kinds of jumps only make sense if your conviction about the opportunity (long term potential, career growth or impact) trumps short term considerations (lower pay and/or title). And of course assuming such a massive paycut won’t prevent you from living your life (eg. paying for your kids’ stuff).

A 40% pay cut will hurt but make sure you have insight into their current share price, strike price on stock options, anti-dilution clauses, and general idea of what the founders’ target liquidity event and timeline will be.

Also, make sure you’re getting a fair title and amount of options for the respective stage of the company (lots of content on Medium and other sites/blogs about % of company you should own as IC/Management by stage)

How do i find out if I will be happier divorced or more unhappily staying married. 2 kids; 2 & 4 YO. They don’t hear the arguments after bed time and don’t understand the bruises yet but I know it’s just a matter of time. It would be so much harder not seeing my kids everyday than living with the pain, loneliness and lost friendships. But I’m tired. And so sad. Lost. So alone. Does anyone have something that turned it around? He changed? You changed so he did? Ayahuasca retreat maybe?
