...and to continue my thoughts... consulting has a higher bar for raw intellectual horsepower, but less value on just working your ass off. Banking is the reverse (both still have high bars on both relative to most careers, but relative importance switches). So play to your strength.
Felt like banking had 1) Far less variety of work 2) Uber-rough learning curve for first six months, then complete flatline (did a summer at Goldman before joining Bain)
Culture and (relative) balance
It was either meet clients and 70 hour weeks or hardly meet clients and 100 hour weeks/death. I chose the former. I know my body won't be able to take terrible hours consistently without any flexibility in my life.
Consulting is bad but if I need to I can request to work from home one week here and there (aka in my undies in bed if I needed a break)
But if you're purely focused on $$s and enjoy paycheck comparison with your friends even more than the consultants on FB, then banking is your thing. Banking also gives a much stronger ego trip for folks early on (tons of news coverage of your projects, more CEO/CFO of Fortune 100 company in the room with you early on, etc.)
Not bro enough for banking too
Started interviewing with Goldman in undergrad, and I just quit. I hated the vibe the interviewers gave, and like Bain alluded to, consulting better rewards intellect.
