These are paid challenges, correct? Because it depends on the budget (and because asking someone to do free work to potentially be hired for a job would be unethical).

It’s for a paid position yes! Part of the interview process - behavioral questions and a challenge to evaluate how the person thinks.

This may be a little adjacent of center in terms of the ask, but I've always found trick questions to be ideal in finding out who someone really is, when standard questions wouldn't. Examples include: unsolvable problems, impossible deadlines scenarios, etc. This may translate into your world differently, but what matters most is how they go about the problem and how they react to these types of situations. Are you hiring a "yes" person or someone who has the intuition and voice to speak truths in difficult situations. Most other stuff can be taught, whereas this doesn't have any shortcuts. Another is getting them to admit when they don't know something. Everyone can bullshit on an interview, getting someone to admit where they lack expertise is a sign of honesty. You can try something like injecting lingo/jargon during the background of a question that would most likely only be understood internally but would be helpful in solving the problem. If the interviewee asks for an explanation you have someone that seeks understanding before execution. If they gloss over it, they may gloss over other important tasks once they're hired if they don't understand them.

Was laid off from D recently and have been interviewing primarily for strategy roles. Curious for any advice converting in final rounds. I have been through several at this point and not gotten the offer. Received very positive feedback from the teams about my performance but in each case they said it was very competitive and ended up going with someone with slightly more direct experience. Tough to go through several 6+ week multi round processes and not convert. Any help or advice appreciated!

Hi, I have a PE case study interview in the coming week and was wondering whether there's an accepted rule for modelling returns - should you use the FY21E figure (assuming some rationale to the run rate) or just use the most recent actual? Motivation for asking is partly as I know lots of deals are being traded off forward EBITDAs so thought maybe using the next year expected figure would be common? Thanks in advance!

Apologies if this is a silly question - New analyst here and trying to get a handle on my finances and retirement portfolio. I’m familiar with the rough sequence of saving being: 3-6 months HYSA, Company match 401k, Roth IRA, HSA, 401k max, personal brokerage (Pls correct me if i’m incorrect here). My question is: Are you expected to invest as much money as you can into each step before proceeding to the next, or do you allocate a portion of your paycheck to each of these steps simultaneously?
