You've got to learn how to deal with all kinds of people and personalities. I highly recommend How to Win Friends and Influence People!
A Classic. I think the 4 Disciplines of Execution is another excellent read.
This is true of any job in our field, but earnest curiosity will get you a long way. Understanding the reasons things are the way they are before you offer an answer will demonstrate to others your goal of being a true partner, and not just another HR person parachuting into their lives. I think you need to care about the person, their motivations, and be a bit empathetic to their worldview. If you do that, you earn trust, and you can be a lot more bold (and often helpful!) in your partnership.
I agree - before I took my current role, I had an HR team that was just...not curious. Like they didn't care about the business or the people, they just wanted to come in, answer a few emails and clock out. The lack of enthusiasm really seeped through and eroded trust. I've since moved to a team where people genuinely care about one another and the org as a whole and are curious to learn and grow without being defensive - it's a much better experience!
