Anyone with advice for new mid-level associates? I’m a 3rd year doing biglaw M&A and have found the transition to be more difficult than starting at my firm. In particular, being responsible for managing and mentoring a first year associate on deals and reviewing/knowing their work product thoroughly (especially diligence) while also being tasked with taking the first shot at initial drafts/mark-ups of deal docs has me feeling stretched thin and making more errors than I used to.

It's a difficult transition. I didn't start feeling like I was "getting it" overall until about my 5th year of corporate. Do the best you can and take the advice your seniors give you. Don't make the same mistake twice. No one's expecting perfection, and diligence and a good attitude will take you far.

There really wasn't an a-ha moment. I just remember one day giving a junior associate some recommendations, and afterward I was like, "hey, I really knew what I was talking about there" lol. It was kind of a general feeling of being comfortable with my own experience. Don't get me wrong, I'm an 8th year and I still have plenty of moments where I don't know the answer, but now I'm more confident that I can figure out what needs to be done.

And of course, keep your relationship(s) with your higher-ups strong, bc it's always good to bounce ideas off more experienced attorneys no matter how experienced you are.

Sounds like you need to find the superstar junior associate and not tell anyone about that person. Also, you need to become ok with things not being to YOUR standard but generally being ok.

That’s a really good question. How were your reviews as a first and second year? Being a mid level requires a totally different skill set.

My reviews were great, all positive comments from a variety of associates/partners I had worked with. Getting the little things right as a junior came easily. I’ve gotten positive feedback on some aspects of being a mid-level like drafting and problem solving, but the two-way management has definitely been a struggle that I’ve gotten some (justified) flak for

Does anybody have an 11th hour blame game partner. Put together a good response on an MTD. Lots of review, discussing, and back and forth as it’s a large case. There was a case cited that neither of us reviewed cited by OC. OC literally gave the case one sentence of attention. Senior partner comes back to me and says review anything cited in a motion before filing a response.
Totally inconsequential issue, but I’m like dude you could have looked too. Definitely a pet peeve.

Am I crazy for trying to switch firms? I am a second year and I love my firm and the people I work for are terrific. My previous practice group was terrible but the work and the people I’m with are great and so is the money (big law). The problem is that I’m not getting enough of it. I range between 110-130 billable hours per month and feel like I don’t deserve my salary. The partners I work with seem to love my work and insist that it’s fine but I have started feeling useless (continued)
