Anyone with experience of deferred income - at the point where I’m looking to put away a significant amount with a 20yr horizon (turned 40 last month!) and it seems attractive. My employer offers decent options similar to 401k vehicles which are lower than my personal risk appetite but say $150k a year gross at 8% for 20yrs and doing it for a few years seems like a boring if safe bet?

I’ve got a friend from industry that deferred a significant portion of his income. His company went bankrupt unexpectedly and his money went with it. He’s in court trying to recover it. I believe my company’s plan is protected, but I’d be certain yours is. The other feature I would check is the distribution policy when you do leave the firm. Generally I believe it’s very short duration, 1-3 years. Depending on how you think taxes will move - up, down or flat - that should be factored into you decision.

I took a look at IBM’s plan (friend went there) - VP level. I read through it - seems like if IBM went bankrupt, you might get screwed as it was just a liability on the balance sheet. Hopefully your plan is different/better.

Actually it is IBM. Almost all deferred are treated the same way

Does anyone have goals of investing their earnings to buy real estate? From doing tax work you see the potential in building a real estate portfolio, but lately I’ve been having doubts about it even being worth doing if you don’t have the real estate professional status with the IRS. My husband and I eloped but are planning our formal wedding in Spring 2023 - this was the right choice for us for many reasons that I don’t need to detail haha. Anyway, we just found a great deal for our dream honeymoon, but the catch is that the trip would be this fall.

Would it be insane for us to do our honeymoon before our formal wedding but after our elopement? We would still do something smaller after the wedding next year!
