Practice law for about 10 - 15 years. Establish a good reputation. Learn something from every mediation you attend. Also see if your local bar has any volunteer mediation projects. We want mediators who know the law, are familiar with the subject matter, and have a good reputation.
Start out with mediation weeks at the courthouse. Do mediation days at Volunteer Legal Services. Work half days as you build up. Find a mentor that does it already. I think it’s a great hedge, and am glad more lawyers don’t pursue the path.
Super interested in answers too!
Think that sort of work is tied up with senior attorneys and retired judges.
There is a great NYSBA CLE that is 2 days and about $200 on these topics. Well worth it. I did it to get NY newly admitted atty experiential credit but loved it, even as a corporate transactional gal. Learned it is mainly eminence gris!
Learned a new word today, haha
This is going to be an uphill climb unless you can become a judge first and then retire, or until you’re a more senior partner. I know that’s not the answer you’re looking for, but it’s the hard truth. Or become some kind of specialized rockstar and build a great business on word of mouth. ADR is a tough business because there’s so many former judges in the game, and lawyers want a known quantity at the wheel.
I appreciate that, thank you
Spent over a decade as a litigator in the practice area I now serve as a mediator.
Knew I wanted to ultimately move into the ADR space. Completed a 40 training on consecutive weekends approximately 5 years into my career. Networked with colleagues who were exclusively in ADR space. Built a good reputation with colleagues as a litigator, and utilized Mediation techniques to settle my cases. Focused on developing relationships to originate this type of work.
Looking back, I’d suggest joining and serving on the ADR bar committees in your jurisdiction early in your career to form those relationships early.
Thanks for the suggestion!
