New to Chicago. Found a room in a 3bed/1 bath near the Addison brown line stop for $650/mo. Not modern, but a nice place & walkable Southport. 45 min commute to work. Is it worth the trade off?

What are the best consulting firms to work at if I want to exit to Big tech in few years (after reaching manager)?

I’m currently a tax accountant with 5 YOE. I want to move into a business analyst role I’ve applied for entry level positions (competition is wild) and willing to get certs. I have great hard and soft skills that should transfer pretty well. Any advice on getting the ball rolling? Should I get a mentor? I’ve seen a lot of layoffs too which kind of makes me wonder if it’s worth it.

I'm currently working in a heritage field trying to figure out the best career pivot and have been working in the survey/data depts for the last 3 years. My knowledge is self taught but I feel like I'm missing out on the basics and to move into something like Data Management my current role it's more about fixing problems and writing procedures (which I enjoy). Any advice on how to start with data management/ training so that I can move into a more standard, better paid career eventually?

I studied computer science in school but I didn’t do well due to life coming in the way. I got poor grades but ultimately finished my degree without any internship experience.

After three months of job search, I started for 45K at a construction company as a Jr App Support. After a year I shifted in to QA for 65k and now after a year of QA, I have finally gotten a position as a software engineer for 78K base.

The imposter syndrome is finally gone!

Hang in there, hard work pays off.

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

Tips for sussing out how demanding an in-house role will be during the interview process? I’m a hard worker and motivated but if I’m taking a large pay cut to go in house I want to try to be sure I’m getting an equivalent increase in work-life balance, and stories of in-house often being just as much of a grind as biglaw scare me.

I’m considering a move from a large public company to a start up that’s just finishing off its Series B funding round. Of course, I understand I’ll have to roll up my sleeves and get things done.

I am currently at a firm and received an in-house offer. Aside from main items like comp and big ticket benefits like PTO/health insurance/401k, what other items do I need to think about discussing/negotiating? For example, fees to keep bar licensure, professional association fees, CLEs, etc. I feel like there is so much on that end I currently take for granted being covered at my firm. Anything else I should consider?

I a mid-level litigator and have an offer at a FAANG, however, I still have roughly $230,000 in student debt. If I can delay my start until June, I will receive the newest round of special bonuses and can make a lump sum payment of ~$50,000 (all principal with the 0%). If I decline the offer and stay with my firm, I can make another $50,000 payment at the end of the year. I ultimately want to be in house, preferably in tech. Would I be crazy to decline to use the bonuses to make big chunk pmnts?

I’m currently at a medium sized tech startup. I was interviewing for a role that would be a bump in pay and title at a multinational public F50 company. At first, the hiring manager and head of legal were very complementary about my experience. Almost too much so. After a week of interviews with the team (softball-esq), I was informed that if I wanted to join, they would bring me on at a lower title. I’m not sure about comp yet. But if comp is still an increase + experience at a public..

Reasonable base compensation expectations for regional general counsel position (direct report to CLO)? I’m in discussions to become the GC of a mid size but international company that does ~$1 billion in annual revenue. Smallish legal department. They’ve asked for my comp expectations. I don’t have specific expectations but I want to be compensated at least market for a NYC based GC (which looks like cash comp of at least $300k plus bonus, etc). Any suggestions on how people would respond?

like

My company historically paid base comp and bonus based on years out of law school. Level 1 is 1-9, and Level 2 is 10+. Diff if $50k+, easily. My team’s work isn’t distributed any differently based on seniority, and we’re all doing the same subject matter. We have a new GC changing it so bonus can be higher (but not lower) if you take on more work.

Do you think this is a fair system? Is it right to push for equal comp, especially given that there’s a new reward system for doing more work?
