Anyone work in a different office from the majority of the other attorneys in their practice group (i.e. very infrequent face time)? Any tips for success?

I work with partners and senior associates in time zones that are ahead of me all the time. Do your best to be available on a somewhat regular basis on their time zone. For example, 2-3 times a week, I get in the office extra early and let them know I’m available for earlier calls. I always send in assignments the night before the actual deadline so that they can wake up and know they can review the materials on their schedule instead of wait for me to get into the office. In short, be flexible enough so that they feel like they can depend on you and communicate with them if something will take longer to manage expectations.

Be responsive to emails. And don't hesitate to pick up the phone. Sometimes tone is everything. My PG is spread out nationwide, but we have a budget for integration where you can spend a few days a year in another city working with members of your group in person.

like

Go spend a week working from the other office.

I have met most of the group a couple times. Will definitely plan on working a week from the other office though!

Don’t be afraid to travel. The mere sacrifice of working from the other offices can help build bonds that will ensure you are remembered and included on major projects. I often plan extended weekends in cities where we have other offices. Work from the remote office Thurs-Fri and enjoy the weekend in a different city. Make sure you let the powers that be know that you are coming, and hopefully get on their calendars.

Our practice group is the same way - phone, email, video conference, visit the other office on a quarterly basis, and we also meet up at industry conferences about 4-5 times a year. Basically feels like we are in the same office

Interested in this, too.

How far is the other office?

Not close. Maybe, you can visit regularly.

like

I did. They ended up sending me to HQ permanently after a year

Agree that being in the right place at the right time is crucial.

There’s video conferencing.
