Anyone work remotely for an east coast location? I am considering moving to Denver and would like to keep my current job, but am concerned about hurtles of a 2 hr difference and longer travel time when I periodically go into the office. What did you do to make it work? Any suggestions on how to pitch it to my supervisor?

I live/work in Denver and my job and direct reports are all in nyc. Time zone differences and travel should be the least of your worries. I’ve always worked east coast hours (even living in SF) and I travel when I need to travel. These are not hurdles.

And if you bring up time zones as an issue for you, you’re going to destroy your case (I.e. not being able to manage time zones is a you problem, not theirs).

I’ve not experienced anything like that. You’ll certainly need to align to their schedule. East coast is hard, they don’t want to stay all night because we chose the right place to live.

I live in Denver and work for a Massachusetts based company. What I do to accommodate the time difference is work east coast hours- so 7AM-3PM Denver time (in my opinion, perfect hours!). My managers had no problem with me moving here- though I was hired remotely- as long as I worked east coast hours so I was accessible to my colleagues throughout the day. Good luck!

My role at PwC is entirely remote but my boss and those I support are mostly based in NYC. When I told them I was moving to Denver they didn’t really care. I keep their same hours so there hasn’t been a dramatic change.

I’m a morning person though so I’m up at 530, start working at 630/7, and I’m done by 4. It’s great for me since I can get to the gym before anyone and I can make a healthy dinner. I’m in bed by 10 most days

I’ve worked east coast hours for the last several years and honestly can’t imagine going back to 9-5. I just tell my team to give me advanced warning if i need to be online before 7AM the following day. It’s great having afternoons/evenings free for appointments, time outside, socializing, etc.

Biggest downside in my opinion is when you need to travel to east coast you basically need to go the night before because 4 hr flight + 2 hr time zone shift takes up the whole day.

like

Oh ya I feel this. Boarded a flight at 5:15am every Monday for a summer to Philly. Most of my other clients I would just fly at night and try to do Monday night so I would disturb offshore connects on Monday

I’ve been on east coast projects from Denver for about 6 yrs now. My last client was completely manageable but my current client likes to work early. I’ve mostly confined them to 6am start times which is manageable as long as I’m not the presenter

I am Denver based now, and my company is based out of Virginia.

I agree with someone else here, don't try to make the time zone an issue. It's a courtesy thing, as they gave you remote now you just need to do your job.

But I have had no issues with time zone differences. In fact, it's kinda nice everyone starts leaving me alone at 2pm each day!

Last thought, if do get to work MT hours and start 8am MT, 10am ET, be ready for your day when you log on for the first time. Because everyone else will be awake and rocking!

Congrats on your new chapter, and I wish you the best of luck!

I live in the Denver area and my employer is in DC. Our whole office had been remote for over a year when I moved so I used that when discussing the move with my employer. The time difference isn’t a big deal. I usually start between 8:30 and 9:00, but I generally check my email around 7am (9 eastern) to make sure there isn’t anything that requires my attention right away. Sometimes I have to do 7 am calls (again, 9 eastern), but that doesn’t happen often. As far as time in the office, I generally fly to DC once a quarter and spend a few days working there.

I work east coast hours from Denver and love it. Best days you’re done by 330, worst days still not super later. One thing nobody mentioned above is offshore coordination. If you have team members abroad, you’ll just need to express that you’re willing to take the occasional 5 AM call or sign back on at the end of your night to connect as needed

like

I don’t think anyone wants to talk to me at 5am—I can be awake and on a call, but will be incoherent!

As others have said- it’s the absolute best case scenario! You get so much free time in the late afternoon / evening and it’s hardly an adjustment starting at 7 if you’re used to waking up around then anyway. I live in Denver and work CT, my boyfriend works ET. Win win win

like

If you're a morning person it won't be a big deal and your evenings are likely to never be booked beyond 5 which is nice.

I work CT hours but start even earlier to work with our global teams. I have always been remote and moving from Chicago to Denver wasn’t a big change until my team started going back into the office. Now I feel more disconnected. I end up going to bed super early and wake up super early on the weekends too but it all works out especially for weekend hikes and all that.

If you can work east coast hours shouldn't be a problem. Been working for east coast clients and European clients for past 3 years in Denver. Just be prepared for 5/6am calls everyday.

Denver 🐠 here. My partner works east coast hours and loves it. Has for years.

Travel - is a pain and time-consuming anyway. Not sure how much this would factor in unless you’re saying “Denver” but are planning on living in Silverthorne over the pass where driving can be totally unpredictable. Denver metro, Boulder, Longmont, Golden— no different than when I lived in Chicago and Fairfax Co, VA and had to get to the airport.

Don’t move here

Here's a quick tip
💡 Use Google’s XYZ formula: "Accomplished [X] as measured by [Y], by doing [Z]."

💡 Example: Instead of saying "worked with team members on project", say "Collaborated with 5+ analysts on go-to-market strategy by researching 20+ cities across the United States, resulting in an ARR of $1M."

💡 Last but not least, keep it concise. One or two pages max
