I’d never experienced micromanaging until I met my first M at EY. Demanding to see emails before being sent out and then changing minor words that did not impact context and were purely stylistic.
It goes both ways as well
You will always find this
I’ve certainly experienced people on my team who genuinely wanted to succeed by doing the right things (for job, company, group, client) but also those who work behind my back, trying to undermine me and wanting my job / thinking they are more qualified at it. I don’t think this has anything to do with manager or employee but rather the values of the individual people.
I’ve seen that scenario a few times, and I’ve also seen seniors who believe they’re better than they actually are- not being able to take feedback to their work without misconstruing it as jealousy or need to improve.
Yup, have experienced this directly from a Partner and Senior Manager. SM said to my face that I make him feel insecure.
