Anywhere in the Baltimore area where young people live/ it’s safe to live for a petite girl in her 20’s? Have a job opportunity there but worried about the excessive crime affecting quality of life.

Dude grow up! I lived as a single young female in Baltimore city for 8 years in grad school. Many single women live there. It’s hilarious because you sound extremely naive and helpless.

Canton and fed hill are your best bets. Fed hill tends to have a bit of a younger crowd.

As a single woman living in Baltimore, I suggest that you do everything you can to minimize your risk of being targeted. Don’t walk around alone without purpose (ie keep you nose out of your phone during the day, and at night uber/lyft). Don’t leave anything in your car worth anything. And always check window and door locks. If there isn’t a reason for them to be unlocked (ie open window when you’re home) then just leave them locked

Those items above are really things anyone living in a city should follow. I don’t add them to deter you, just things to keep in mind. I have lived in canton for the past 10 years. There are so many great things about this city...they don’t call it charm city for nothing :) and congrats on the job opp!!

This post is extremely silly. Baltimore, like many major cities, has some nice areas and some not nice areas. Do the most superficial research and you will be fine. Baltimore isn’t Beirut or Baghdad. People are giving you shit because your post reads like someone who thinks details like your height gender and weight are relevant when choosing a major city with a population of >600k.

Also, look into hamsterdam as someone else recommended. Highly underrated - and I heard Chris and Snoop are no longer around anyway

Federal Hill

Are you looking for apartment / condo, or house? Also, prefer quiet or more proximity to bars and shops? Either way, I’d look at Federal Hill, Fells Point, or Canton. My brother-in-law lives in Canton and loves it, and there are tons of young professionals there.

Young male, live in Baltimore w/ gf. I’d go canton.

We lived in fed hill when we were 25 and it felt really young and fratty. Crime in fed hill surged last year. With both of those combined I think it’s a definite no.

Canton is a little too yuppie for my tastes but I can’t deny how much I appreciate how safe and convenient it is. We live there now and I can say that I have never felt unsafe.

Another possible option is Hamden. It’s a hipster neighborhood that also might be worth looking at, it’s almost in the county but it’s supposedly a really fun neighborhood. Not sure how safe it is at night.

How is it hilarious? As a young/small girl it’s a concern when considering a new city where you’ll be living by yourself. Baltimore has a worse crime rating than Compton ... it’s one of the most dangerous cities in the US so no it’s not hilarious it is a series concern for someone of my profile

like

C2 if it’s such a problem you can ignore my post? I don’t think it’s that crazy to ask people about a city you’ve never experienced. It’s called doing due diligence. Would you move somewhere without doing any research or asking anyone about the area? You have serious problems for attacking random people on the internet over nothing I would suggest you get help

Baltimore should be nuked and paved.

Baltimore is fine, it’s easy enough to avoid the bad parts...look at federal hill and fells point and some of the areas near JHU...Roland park is really nice too but has more of a suburban vibe...sort of like Baltimore’s equivalent of upper nw dc.

I know it seems scary, but Baltimore can be pretty nice. I lived there as a single, (also petite), 21 year old when I started graduate school. The high crime stats come from certain areas where drugs & violence are prevalent (East Baltimore, for example).

However a lot of places are gentrified and safe - these include areas near Johns Hopkins undergraduate campus (where the university has patrol cars, e.g., Charles Village). Other good neighborhoods are Mt. Vernon, Fed Hill, Fell's Point, Harbor East.

I recommend carrying pepper spray, avoid walking around aimlessly at night in unknown neighborhoods, live in a secure entry building (ideally with doorman).

like

Op- I don’t blame you for asking these questions. We have to do our research about safety. That is the world we live in. Of course, people could also stop attacking women, but that’s a fight for another day

I lived in Federal Hill for 7-8 years then just moved to Locust Point a year ago. Agree with mostly everything already said but want to add just a few things. You’ll be safe from violent crime in all of the neighborhoods suggested above unless you’re stumbling home from a bar at 2am. You will have to watch out for nuisance crimes though, and this probably applies in any city. Keep your phone stashed away when walking around, don’t leave your purse or laptop bag in the front seat of your car, don’t sit your phone on the table where someone could easily grab it and run if you’re sitting outside at a restaurant.

Also would you be flying out a lot or driving daily? I’d factor commuting times too. I love Fells Point but could never live there because I need easy access to I-95...

Towson is just outside of the city and growing but it’s really far from the airport.

PS nice to see a few of us actually living in Baltimore. McK1 it looks like you’re cool to live here even there there’s no office in the city?
