Can you use something that was submitted to the court so that it’s already public record?

likesmart

If it’s public record f your supervising attorney. You can produce it as is.

I’m curious as to how this even works. You asked your supervisor if you could use a writing sample to apply for a new job? I just took the writing sample, redacted it thoroughly, and submitted the app. Maybe that was wrong?

like

What A1 said. I did find an MSJ I had drafted and filed so was able to use that.

Yikes. Your old supervisor sounds like a real piece of work.

You could offer to draft a brief for the hiring partner on an issue they need researched if you want to demonstrate your problem solving skills and willingness to go the extra mile... but who tf has time for that?

I definitely would not use a sample from law school. Public filing is the way to go.

like

You could highlight this fact in the cover letter

Yes, you definitely are. Why do you need to ask for permission?

like

If you can’t use your work writing samples, I’d definitely go edit and update your law school memo to reflect your current writing skills.

like

If it’s part of the public record, your supervising attorney can kick rocks and you can use it.

Fascinating, I wouldn’t have asked for permission.

They taught us in law school that writing samples from a previous employer always need to include a cover letter stating that we had permission from that firm to use it. Not sure how true that is now after seeing the comments on here.

So I have a moral dilemma. I requested a raise a month ago. It was finally approved. Within the last month they’ve offered 3 others counter offers AFTER I requested my raise. In that time I was interviewing elsewhere. The job I want is about $5-7k more than my raise request, but the benefits and bonuses are significantly better. Is it frowned upon to get a raise and then leave 3-4 weeks later? I don’t feel valued knowing others got a raise after I asked, and much quicker (less than a week).
