I’m in the same boat. Applied for three positions within my own district and not even an interview. I also have a masters. I wonder if it’s because I’m so needed in my own position that they don’t want me moving.

like

@VirginiaHS1, Very possible- NEED/program-based decisions.

They don’t want to pay you. I have now been teaching for 21 years, but when I got my masters three years in, things got ugly, and I realized I had learned my lesson too late.

That was my issue, found a school on year 2 of the search that appreciates my experience and varied science background.

I’m in the same spot, I was downsized to a para and applied for 13 teaching positions and not a single interview. I see other teachers getting new positions and nothing for me. I also have a masters in Ed, no idea what is happening now.

It really depends on your location. Here in Ohio, we have a teacher shortage. My district is hiring teachers with an MA. It’s no issue.

likehelpful

I know the districts my family in Ohio lives near are hiring. Unfortunately, I have a son who is senior and a daughter who is a junior, so moving across country right now isn't feasible, though we will be within the next 3 years (and I'll only be 45 at that point). They're saying we have a teaching shortage in my area as well, so I'm not sure what's going on.

helpful

Hang in there! It seems like there are always a flurry of postings in the last few weeks before school starts once people have made final decisions about what they’re doing. Those jobs may not have really been “available,” just posted because they had to.

like

Don't give up hope. I'm seeing the reverse, where few applicants for all the vacancies. Best of luck and stay positive.

like

Me too, there is a major shortage where I work.

like

I'm not sure what your core area is, but keep applying. Maybe you could have a friend with interviewing/paper screening experience take a look at your resume. Good luck!

likehelpful

Thank you! I did have someone redo my resume and all of that. I'm also working on submitting a new cover letter directly to the schools, since they do their own hiring. I'm hopeful that it is some combination of offers pending, teacher shifts, etc.

When I started teaching over 20 years ago I was close to completing a Master's and chose not to so I wouldn't be to high on the pay scale. I don't think the strategy has changed much. They want you to have the better education but they don't want to pay for it. Best to be tenured before you earn the Master's Degree.

Not from what I've found, no.

I'm still on the sub registry and I'm one of the top subs in the district, so I had wondered if my degree was holding me back, along with the lack of qualified subs. Yet I know of two PhD teachers in the district that were just recently hired. I'm looking to take my English pedagogy classes soon; I passed the NES and can get certified in any other state except OR to teach ELA without having those classes.

like

They very well might be hiring teachers with no MA (if any applied) instead of interviewing candidates higher on the pay scale. 🤷🏻‍♀️ A couple years ago I found out that a principal I interviewed with in a different building in my district hired someone out of their licensure area instead of me!!! I still had a great position, just not on the calendar I wanted (45/15 — similar to year round), so I didn’t fuss too much, but I’m pretty sure that wasn’t legal! 🤨

I saw a message at the bottom of a post for a position that I really liked. It basically said that research shows women and people of color are less likely to apply for a job if they don’t believe they meet all of the requirements listed in the job posting exactly, and to please apply for the job if you think you would do well in the position, as they are always searching for the best fit for any given position.

I'm on the same boat struggling to find a position for the fall. Fingers crossed that gears start turning soon, best of luck!

Sometimes a higher education is not a blessing unfortunately.

like

It’s not what you know it’s who you know unfortunately. We have a shortage where I work but even here it’s hard to get an interview unless you know someone. It shouldn’t be that way but it is. You just have to keep trying, something will come open!
