Don't be that friend .... Let them buy you a round of drinks or simply have Goodwill in the future.... I imagine you make enough that $20/night shouldn't materially impact your economic situation.
Dont be a dick
Was going to make the same comment
It’s certainly not inappropriate.
But if it’s a good friend (unless you need the money), I wouldn’t. I’d let them buy a round of drinks or something.
It all depends on how good a friend you’re talking about though.
In this situation I would ask for them about 25% of what it would typically cost to rent the room for cash
Ie: the room was 100\night, so ask for 25/night
But as P1 said, it depends on how good of a friend we’re talking about
Did two nights at the ritz in New Orleans for a bachelor party and we agreed that my buddy would pay for one night out in its entirety (dinner, drinks, cover at strip club but no dances). Reasonably fair for both of us and he was a good buddy so I would have been fine with whatever but he insisted that would be most fair
How many points do you have? I’ve done this a few times but I’ve always found it to be an awkward conversation since if it were up to my friend we would be staying at an Airbnb. So if you have a surplus I would just do this as a nice thing for your friend
P1, that is not normal - my project is in SF but my limit is $300... so consider yourself very lucky
As long as it’s agreed upon beforehand it’s fine. When I go traveling with friends often one person will take care of the hotel but the rest will either transfer our own points over or agree on a point valuation beforehand and add it into the Splitwise for the trip. We do pretty much everything down the middle, though, to minimize hassle and avoid being that person who nickels and dimes the rest of the group because they “only had 1 drink” or “had the soda bed instead of the real bed” or whatever.
Good thread y’all thanks. I’ll eat it and be happy to be with friends!
If you were on my team and talked about doing this, I would roll you off
Dont charge him anything and i am sure he will treat you for dinner
Don’t ask for money, ask them to pay for a dinner or something.
Depends on your relationship. I think it's perfectly fine if you are honest and not trying to be sneaky about it - that is where you get into trouble. I agree with others that a bartering approach is very acceptable. Say "hey I'll take care of the room, you buy drinks/dinner for the night" or whatever you deem acceptable.
For your relatively lower room rate/point spend, the barter seems the best option. But it it were more expensive and a longer time frame, certainly ask for money for their portion. I just did this for a group of friends when we were renting a 3 bedroom apt at a marriott in Las Vegas. It was a lot of points, but I looked into what the cost would have been as well as what Marriott points are valued at on the points guy. I then let people know I'll use my points but everyone owes $X because it actually ended up saving money for everyone going that route. Nobody had any issues.
i typically have my friends cover a nice dinner or a couple rounds of drinks in exchange for a points-booked stay.
I do this all the time and am always super upfront about the room cost in $ versus value of points. Instead of splitting the room with one person, I would charge about 40% of the cost of the points
If a good friend they will treat you to dinner etc. don’t be petty
Nice^
I did this with a few buddies. We’re all good friends and they all insisted on paying me something . I bought a room on points for 6 nights. They offered me 100$/night/guy. I asked for 25/night/guy, they paid me 50/n/g
It’s fair to get some form of compensation but the level is a personal thing. Don’t try to profit off it, they’re you’re friends
Do you charge your friends a % of gas money anytime they ride in your car?
