McKinsey & Company Career advice needed. Thanks in advance. What would be a potential feasible path to make the transition from Big Four assurance role to MBB consulting role? I have 1 year experience in industry as FP&A and couple months as fund accountant before I graduated from school and went to Big four as IT auditor and could switch to core auditor ,cybersecurity or ECG advisory etc. I’ll get the CPA and CFA soon and have some basic coding skillsets. Considering to do MBA/graduate degree if necessary. McKinsey & Company PwC Deloitte

McKinsey gave me an offer and I went to a state school, don’t stress too much

It was a few years ago and I chose a startup over McKinsey at the time bc of better salary and benefits
UNC is the best (really only) option on this list. Even then a long shot.

Hire from a T-20 school. Primarily I put a solid resume as well as networked quite well with the alumni in my school. Got also an offer from Bain as well. It is very much possible and do not think it is M7 or bust
It’s possible to get hired from a non target school but will be difficult. I personally don’t know anyone at BCG CHI that is from any of those schools for MBA.
There’s several bcg chi people from tepper. I know at least 2
I would say all less likely and may help to focus on geos near the school. I would estimate at least 95% of MBA candidates come from T15 schools. When outside of that, there is typically more of a geo match (i.e., McCombs with Texas offices). However, I imagine there is at least someone from every one of these schools at each firm.
Several of these are BCG and Bain targets. McKinsey has a much shorter target school list.
IIRC Bain has like 40 target MBA programs, whereas McKinsey has like less than 20
Yes MBAs from any of those schools have a chance - is it a good chance like HBS/GBS/Wharton? Definitely not - but there is still a chance

Market is hot right now, you can get offers from any of those schools.

Except it’s not. And things are always changing. I got an offer to lateral in at the manager level. They never used to do that or recruit much out of my firm. Point being, your school name doesn’t matter as much as you think. Focus on the stories you can tell and what you’ve done and how to show the qualities they’re looking for (drive, entrepreneurship, impact, etc.) Being interesting and having broad interests and experiences will almost always beat stronger credentials but uninteresting stories, all else equal.

Have to put in more leg work because you don't have on campus recruiting. Know folks who did it from both Tepper and Simon.
What if they were an experienced hire who happened to go there, as opposed to someone with 2-3 years work experience. Would the work experience (if relevant) counteract the “weaker” program?
