Are any other teachers told to be at work before you start getting paid?
We don’t get paid until 7:45. Every week we are told to be there earlier and earlier. It is now to 7:10 and staying until 4pm. We stop getting paid at 3:15. Does anyone else have this problem ?

We keep the kids in our rooms until their buses are called. We have buses that daily come after our contract hours. I raised my concerns about this a few years ago. I was basically told to suck it up and deal with it. I am salary and have to stay until the job is done. Contact hours really don’t mean a thing.

likehelpful

Not necessarily. Oklahoma is a right to work state and we have teachers' unions--they just don't have the "teeth" to hold others responsible for idiotic mandates.

like

They get away with it because we are on salary. It’s funny though, when they calculate my sick leave earned it’s based on 7 hours even though I’m scheduled to work 8. Yes, my union knows. Yes, the superintendent knows. I’m the only one that had an issue. I stopped saying anything 4 years ago. My new boss just learned why. We are taken advantage of until we decide to quit. Then we are replaced with those that don’t know anything is wrong.

Our contract is 7:15 to 3...staff meetings until 4....most of us volunteer when needed but I have never been told I had to do something outside of contract hrs

like

Has your union been made aware? Sounds like your contractual hours are not being upheld.

likehelpfulfunny

Sounds like the bell schedule should be adjusted then... which shouldn't be on the teachers.

like

Many of the teachers who are being taken advantage of teach in "right to work states" that do not have unions that function as they do in the rest of the country. Unfortunately, this will not change unless the laws change to allow unions to exist for these teachers. Until then, when these teachers are asked to "jump" the only response possible is "How high?"
Please realize this is NOT the norm in states like California. Districts must abide by all terms negotiated in our contracts. Sometimes district personnel try to jump over the line but are quickly set straight and apologies are made pronto.

like

@Oklahoma: Don’t you guys caravan to Oklahoma City to picket instead of enjoying informative professional development during in-service days? And considering Oklahoma teachers’ salaries, you should be standing in line to join a union.

My district contract says that we have to be on campus 30 prior to the start of the school day (we are paid for this time) and are obligated to attend one after school staff meeting per month for no more than 60 minutes. Our contact says that we are not required to be on campus once students have been released for the day except if we are doing extra duty or coaching a sport. I get paid until 4 but am contractually allowed to leave at 2:15.

like

I know all unions work hard, but my union goes above and beyond to fight for teachers being treated fairly. I’m very appreciative of them!

like

All this stuff is so foreign to me. Our 'contract' stipulates arrival 30 minutes before the first bell to 20 minutes after. But there is a constant demand for committee meetings after school, and staff meetings go however long they go. There are also expectations for gate duties for athletic events and several teachers who have bus licenses because they coach (and therefore have to drive their team) are often called as substitute bus drivers. In some schools in my district, that kind of duty is barely optional because of pressure from principals and the shortage of drivers. This happens way more often these days, and I'm very glad I let my CDL lapse a few years ago.

In all, between meetings and other duties/expectations that crop up, I probably work after 'contract hours' 4-6 times a month. And that's not including grading or planning that I being home. (Note that we do not have the right to unionize in NC.)

like

Gosh I couldn’t imagine driving a bus load of kids after teaching them all day!

I take contracted hours as the minimum required for your pay. Everyone takes the time they need to do what they feel is required. Those extra committees aren’t required, optional. If you are pursuing a leadership role to become admin, you do it.

Admin doesn’t have contracted time. They need to be at sporting events, arbitration meeting etc. (why pursuing admin for me isn’t a desire)

Depending the district and the job availablity, I can see how this could get abused.

With Covid and requirements though, 20 minutes to make sure kids stay distant doesn’t seem like a extreme request.

like

Oh, volune-told. I am so sorry your district/school is like that. Thinking about it. Do you think the size of the school makes the difference in this discussion?
Smaller schools-less teachers- more demands?
Bigger schools -more teachers- relaxed?

There is an average of 140 teachers at my school. 5-6 VPs. We don’t have deans.

like

Our union negotiated our professional day. 10 minutes before school starts and 10 minutes after. So grateful.

like

Our time was moved up by 15 additional minutes, I am hoping that by doing this maybe it will trim time off at the end of the school year?! Maybe
Our district asked us, this way the kids are not in the hallways waiting 30 minutes for teachers to arrive. And social distancing. It works for us.

like

I think many teachers are in the same boat. In our county, the contracted hours were removed from our contract this year. We are basically having to do anything that our county dictates. They have tried to compensate a little since we come in 30 minutes earlier to house students. However, we are overworked in general and many teachers are looking for a way out. Virginia is a “no union” state. Our local education association has been lobbying for us. It was stated in our last board meeting that “ just because teachers are a little uncomfortable, shouldn’t make us change the way we operate.” Uncomfortable is the understatement of the year. People truly do not understand the extra hours put in on evenings and weekends, unless they are in the midst of what is going on. Many of the decision makers are not!

like

thats just wrong, NEA up!

The days get longer every week! The "subtext" is that if you really care and want to get it all done, you'll be working these insanely long hours.

like

Just stop doing it. They try to do that and I just don't come in. I know you are in a red state that makes it harder, but teachers take too much. Push Back

My union in WA state was awesome. Principals and other administrators could NOT take advantage of teachers. If we were required to stay late we were either paid or time was exchanged. If we were called into the office, we could always take our building rep in with us. We had two requirements student free 15 breaks and one 30 min. duty free lunch. (The principal, school counselor, and Title 1 teachers covered the lunchroom and playground) I also made an excellent salary. Here, time keeps increasing on both ends, now we are required to be here 8 hours, paid for 7.5., no breaks, no duty free lunch, and I have no planning time. That’s an additional 2.5 hours per week 10 hours a month 100 hours a year. Just think of the extra money... It adds up. Even an assistant making $10.00 an hour would see another $1,000.
I do all of my planning prep, and Sped Ed paperwork at home.
I get emails about NEA, CEC, and PENC lobbying for us at the state level, as I am a member of all three, but nothing changes at the local level. “Other assigned duties” pretty much gives cart blanc. So called bonuses seemingly disappear or are given to central office staff. It’s not right, but it’s reality.

like

That is wildly outside your contract hours!!! I'm sure a lot of teachers are at school that long anyways but it CANNOT be required!!! Talk to your union rep!

Her state probably is a "right to work" state which means no union, no contract.

Yes.

Our union would go bananas!

If you have a union- then follow your contract and get guidance from them- that's unethical- they can't tell you to do additional hours that are not on your contract unless getting a stipend

Our contract is from 7:45 am until 3:30 pm. We are rarely asked to come in early or stay late (the exception being conferences, but we are allowed to flex our time if we work beyond contracted hours). This sounds like an issue that needs to be taken to the union if you are being required to come in outside of contract time.

We get the Friday afternoon of the week off of P/T conferences for Staying late on Thursday
