Are any privacy and data protection attorneys willing to offer suggestions on how a junior attorney can get into this space? I am taking the CIPP/US exam this week and have privacy internships, (cont)

It might actually be easiest to go inhouse and break in. If you go to a mid size or smaller company inhouse, you will likely be able to work on privacy.

like

This. Apply inhouse. Nearly every job posting will have requirements for someone more experienced, but it's very likely that ideal candidate doesn't exist. Keep applying and something will catch.

like

Honestly...there isn't a strong need for a ton of juniors. People hire the eminence gris for privacy advisory and so if your firm is full up, keep plugging away at your skills and you'll still be a very desirable in house hire.

like

Definitely a chicken or the egg issue yes. If your firm does a lot of M and A, volunteer for privacy diligence on cross border deals perhaps.

I’ve been doing privacy / cybersecurity in big law for nearly 4 years, with experience at a smaller shop previously. My advice is reconsider if it’s what you want to do. The lucrative files are litigation or major regulatory investigations. Revising privacy notices and politics is boring and not seen as valuable work. DD on M&A can occasionally be interesting but it’s usually small chunks of work on tight turnarounds. Consultants have gobbled up all the real internal compliance work (and do it cheap because they basically churn shitty paper that bites the client when they need it). Data breach work is interesting but it’s like having a closing dumped on you that you didn’t expect — punishing hours.

You might like tech commercial better. A lot is driven by data and privacy now anyway.

like

Nice. Thanks! I will try to get on tech transaction. I was told that I gotta volunteer to write publications for the group I want to get work from. Is this way tested and true or are there any other ways?

But it’s been hard trying to get into my firm’s group. Any advice on how to impress the privacy chair at my firm? I am in a major market, but jobs are still scarce. Any advice would be appreciated!

Offer to do biweekly updates on CCPA-like bills in state legislatures and that are passed into law. Key points to cover are:
— Private rights of action, yes/no;
— Consumer rights to request “do not sell my data” (including breadth of that, and does it reach tracking cookies by advertisers);
— Territorial scope (CCPA has national scope);
— Required items on home page of website like CCPA has for CA rights;
— Opt-in requirements for sale of data, email marketing, etc.

There are public websites where you can get this info, but it takes time. Some BigLaw firm might be interested if you do a few over some weeks and show you have a good presentation and grasp of the issues. If you are very enterprising, you could create your own subscription service that undercuts the very pricey ones now available.

I got an offer for an APM position in Gartner and I have decided to join.
The role is to work on internal products and Salesforce CRM development from scratch where many product managers would be involved.
Currently working as a risk analyst at American express since past 8 months but feel like I would be able to grow more in a product manager role.

I want advice from experienced people here. What do you think about this career move

I got passed over for a promotion to manager at a company I've been with for 9 years. They claim it's because I don't have enough sales experience, yet the 2 people they promoted to the role were doing the same thing as me beforehand. In fact, 1 of the people was just given the role and didn't have to go through the 5 interviews the rest of us had to endure. I'm debating whether I should stick around and see if some other manager role opens up or plan my way out of there.
