People have families dawg. One day you will understand how much life the commute takes away from you. Although I also understand that A1s were put in a tough position to try and make yourselves known.

EY 5 - I agree that learning in person for most people is probably easier and more effective. I was just trying to offer the benefits and suggestions of how to be able to learn in a remote environment. This is a great topic because I would like to be able to teach and have staff retain the information I am teaching them. Instead of putting all the effort into getting back into the office since we don’t know when and if that will happen, we should focus on what can work when teaching staff in the remote environment.
Staff - there has to be some things that you found were helpful when getting taught in a remote environment. Please share so I can do more of that with my staff.
1) work from home remains the default especially if people don’t have childcare / are still in another city / haven’t been able to get fully vaxxed yet
2) if you want to spend time with other staff 1s, just plan a happy hour (virtual or IRL) and invite the whole start class. You’ll bond more than just having your team in the office

It’s your responsibility to make yourself happy so if it means you setting up a happy hour and you paying for your own drinks then do it. If the time, effort and money aren’t worth it to you then reach out to a higher up manager/SM and see if they will give you a budget OR don’t do anything and be in the same spot you’re in now.
I’m less frustrated by this than the approximately zero effort to actually develop/train us new staff. I get that everyone is busy, but no one seems to give a damn, especially if you perform well enough.

Until the high turnover happens, then they will do something. Haven’t you noticed the leaders are more reactive than proactive? Most accountants are really good at analyzing actual data and the turnover just isn’t bad enough for them to do anything or they are too busy putting out other “fires”.
I feel for you, but also realize that being in the office will not necessarily solve this. As an A2 I never want to go back to the office because I felt like I didn’t belong and didn’t have any friends. Yes I got to know my team, but they already had established friends/peer groups and I think a lot of new hires will feel the same when we return. Firms typically don’t organize networking events for first years like they do for interns so it’s on you
Also Staff 1 but never want to go back to office!

You should try to network in this remote environment since I don’t think it’s going away. When I need help I usually ping people and ask for a phone call, I reach out to my level and ask them questions about work, our firm sets up weekly meetings to talk about what’s going well and what isn’t going well and sometimes we just shoot the breeze and talk about stuff outside of work. Try to learn how to adapt in your own ways to the changing environment. As you can see, some people agree with you and others would rather work at home permanently.

It’s really not up to the firms to help you network and get to know your peers once you join, even in normal times. Once you are here, it’s up to you to make friends and form connections. So, if you want to be doing things with your peers, initiate those events.
By the time people are managers, SMs, PPEDs, they have their own lives, friends, and SOs to hang out with so don’t really care about networking at the office, at least in my experience.

Technology exist which allow you to network with people remotely. You can’t force your team to go in because you want to meet them. It’s also not up for the team to try and read what you want or prefer- you should be reaching out and voicing what you want as well. If they say they’re not comfortable going into the office yet, you can’t fault them for that either...
Though I see what you are trying to get from it, the “we should do this because I want to” attitude will quickly alienate people away from you.

PwC6- when we started and built our network through in-person interaction years ago, there wasn’t a pandemic that killed over 200,000 Americans (and counting) and infected millions more thereby putting your family, my family, or the random people you walk by at risk unnecessarily.
No, office jobs didn’t go full-remote for no reason.
I think you may have to adjust your future expectations. Every team/partner I’ve spoke to don’t plan on going in more than 1/2 times a week until busy season. I can imagine that’s hard as a staff. Hopefully the firm will find a way to make the staff transition easier going forward
Yeah I totally understand. I live in NYC and can barley handle a train ride. If my clients didn’t require us to be at the location I would love to do another busy season at home
Who normal wants to go back to EY office full of depressed people. They should all quit and become happy as they were before joining the EY.
A1 here. No lol - i would prefer to stay remote personally. Have a solid setup here
Please bring it up if it is important to you. I also feel like it is hard to grow professionally while working from home.
I go into my office 1-2 days a week, but even when I do go in, it’s more for a change of scenery or being downtown is convenient for something that day. We aren’t working in cubes, so there’s still no opportunity to really interact and discuss things with peers. Personally I feel like what people have missed out on is more learning opportunities than networking.
They are still telling us not to come in 🤷♂️
