I would say yes. Manager is a well understood term across industries whereas the exact boundaries between consultant, senior consultant, associate, and senior associate vary from firm to firm and therefore seem vague.
A manager is a category change (at least in meaning) because it makes it clear that you manage other people, rather than just being a better solo operator.
Typically yes because you have “management” experience vs IC
It also depends on if you like what you are doing. Much difficult to switch areas once you are a Manager.
Would you wait to make SM? My feeling is no because once you're an SM not only are you very expensive, but it's pretty clear you're ingrained in your firm. Although, I guess as an SM it's easier to leave for a true executive role before making MD.
