Never heard of anyone leveling up. Anywhere. Ever.

My friend did when she went from one firm to another (with a partner) to start a new practice area. Went from 5 to 6.
I got a 15k sign on as a second year (2019 grad) when I lateraled (from V20s to V30s) earlier this year.
I could have brought it up but I’m not sure how much more I could have got. And yes I get the retention bonuses, subject to meeting hours on an annualized basis.
I’d like to know if anyone has negotiated to level up a year. That seems incredibly unlikely at least at my firm
I am not sure it would be offered to juniors if it’s ever offered.
I got 15k as a second year. My third year colleague got 15k and negotiated up to 30k.
But I started after the emails went out.
At my firm I know they’ve given ~$30k+ to 3rd years and they get the retention bonus if they start before it’s paid. Bonuses for 5th years can get into the six figures.
I'm a third year and only managed to negotiate a 13k sign on bonus.
Will you likely get more if you’re dropping from a V5 to say a V50?
