Yes, they are. Went to Kenya in August and it was amazing! Got to see so many wild animals including Hyena’s take down a Wildebeest, lions mating, etc. to Check Emboo Camp in the Maasai Mara. It was a really cool place to stay and they were fantastic hosts. I also went to Amboseli and that was great as well. As mentioned above, the Giraffe Manor is supposed to be great, but it’s typically booked up like two years in advance. We did get to go to their grounds and meet some of the giraffes though which was cool. I wish I could go back!
If you want to end your trip on the beach there are supposed to be some beautiful ones in Kenya. We went to the Seychelles, which were amazing as well.
Just a suggestion- use a travel agency. It was so nice to have options presented to us and then all we had to do was narrow it down.
Kichwa is now $600 per person per night during migration season. With the honeymoon deal, it is like $900 per night! And that's for the rooms that don't have a view. If you have a view from your tent, double the price!
I genuinely have no idea, but I just wanted to suggest my absolute bucket list destination as an alternative: Giraffe Manor.
That's super disappointing to hear. I'd only seen positive reviews prior to now.
I recently did a 5 day safari in Tanzania and it cost ~$4k total for two people. we stayed in relatively nice places (ngorogoro crater lodge, Serengeti safari lodge) and had a private driver. Definitely no need to spend $2k per night
We booked through Maggie’s tour company, who partners with mwewe expeditions which is who our guide actually worked for. If you go with them ask for Luther as your guide! He was the BEST
Maybe you are looking at very expensive hotels, 2k a night sounds on the higher end. If considering Kenya look at the conservancies also, they have smaller selection of animals but you get a more private experience, example of conservancy. https://www.lewa.org/experience-2/the-lodges/
We really want to be on the great migration bath. That's part of the reason why prices are elevated
Doing 7 days with 5 people for 2800 per person. Staying at premium lodges. All inclusive with alcohol. Zanzibar for another week at an exclusive resort/retreat. Including flights, all guide and accommodations about $10k for two people. Going at the tail end of the migration this year. 16 days total.
The Serena safari lodges are great, especially at ngorongoro. Prices aren’t crazy and they are very nice. Would totally go back and I’m pretty picky/bougie about my hotels.
$2k a night is high, you don’t need to spend that much to get very nice accommodations. The main difference between cheap and expensive is private vs public game reserves - as long as you have access to the private ones you’ll see the same animals whether you spend $800 a night or $2k. IMO $2k is not worth having someone draw me a bath every night (which they will do at the really expensive places) so def would not spend that much.
$2k per night is pretty high. My husband and I did a trip to Namibia, and we drove ourselves between safari lodges. If you’re not committed to Kenya or Tanzania I would absolutely recommend doing a self drive in Namibia. We saved money over a package, customised our itinerary to exactly what we wanted to see and for how long, and were able to choose exactly where we wanted to spend more money and where we were happy to downgrade to save a bit. We spent about $15k all in for 2.5 weeks.
We did a mid tier safari in South Africa (want to say it was $600-700 a night) and it was incredible. If you’re planning to be on 2 game rides a day, you’re mostly at the reserve during lunch / early afternoon. My personal opinion is you can have a fantastic experience at a lower tier, but did enjoy that we didn’t go super cheap / self drive etc. meals, rides, bush walks etc we’re included. In case it’s helpful, we did Motswari at the Timbavati Reserve. We felt like our biggest trade off for spending less was that we had more buffet type meals vs personalized chef experiences.
OP did you find a good deal? In the same boat
If you really want to ball, the singita is apparently the best, but also is painfully expensive. The people that we know that have done it said it was the best hotel they ever stayed at. It also would break our budget
