To determine effectiveness, you must first define the measure of success.

For example, my company has been doing a great job at looking at how they can do better in bringing in more diverse candidates. But until you reach a critical mass and foster development and cultural changes within the firm, we will continue to see near zero representation at higher levels. Pretty useless imo if people are just quitting after while, right?

like

99% of diversity comes from HR and Admin, because most of HR /Admin consists of: 1) women, 2) women of color, 3) women over 40.

like

We need more allies to champion these initiatives. Issues that the minority community face will not be heard unless a member/members from the majority vocalizes these issues and emphasizes how severe they are to the majority and people in power. That is why we need to break the silence from the majority. This goes across class, race, sex/gender, etc.

likehelpful

They are effective only if non-minorites actively say the same message vs just minority groups agreeing with each other in an echo chamber.

like

In my opinion it’s a PR stunt of corporations. You and I know only people with popular opinions can be themselves at work. Inclusion and diversity becomes exclusive if you slightly deviate from the orthodoxy set forth by our employers.

like

I’m glad you had a positive experience. That’s very important.

PM me!

like

Very simply, it comes down to pipeline (people who are interested and qualified, show up) and sponsorship (people from the top willing to coach and pull people up).

like

They can be effective, but too often aren't looked at critically to figure out what's actually needed and effective and instead falls to things that sound good but are too surface level

like

Yup. Or they're just not connected. So each initiative appears to hit it's goal but as a whole they fail miserable to achieve anything.

like

Not really, they always seem to end up siloed for the populations they serve. I think part of it is that it’s hard for an “outsider” to feel a sense of belonging in a group focused on a shared experience that they lack.

For example, I lead a veterans initiative at my firm. Our initiative leaders are veterans and military spouses, and we serve veterans and military spouses. Events are open to all, but there’s maybe one event a year that non-vets attend (placing flags at the local National Cemetery).

like

What’s wrong with hiring based on talent? Disregard gender, race and anything else that categorizes people. Talent is designed to bring value to an organization.

I wish you the best of luck. No one is playing victim it’s a fact. Even when starting a business POC have a harder time securing loans across the board. Also what handout? People use their outside family & social connections to secure roles all of the time. In my starting class alone 5+ people landed their first role from social connections unrelated to acn. I’m just asking for an equitable playing field.

Any moms who really badly wanted a girl but ended up with a boy(s)? How do you feel now? Do you still want a girl? Would you try again? Does it matter really, or was it just in your head?

Had a difficult relationship with my mom growing up, so always wanted that closeness with my future daughter. FTM having a boy and a little disappointed, but feeling guilty for that too. Difficult pregnancy so likely won't have another. But I want a girl. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Please no woke left gender drama responses. Thanks.

How do you deal with colorism that promotes diversity and inclusion in the workplace?

I’m a SPED Resource/Inclusion Teacher which I really love. I really like working with the Gen Ed teachers maybe because my background is Gen Ed. I’m noticing many SPED team members go straight to the principal if they have an issue with a Gen Ed teacher instead of going to the teacher directly. Is this the norm now? What happened to SPED working with Gen Ed? Maybe I’m old school, but this seems so wrong to me. Thoughts?

Hi ladies, just curious - what are some of the most amazing initiatives you’ve been part of/heard of to enable gender equality in the office?

like

Do NOT claim you are "colorblind" in the workplace. 1. DE&I knowledge is now a core leadership competency. Colorblind claims will earn you the reputation of being DEI-ignorant at best & racist at worst. 2. Colorblindness within the context of workplace diversity is an obvious lie. You do NOT want to be painted as an intellectually dishonest leader. 3. Colorblind claims signal that you lack the leadership skills & vocabulary to have key conversations. Hey fellow fishies! There have been some questions lately about men lurking in this bowl. I’ve reached out to Fishbowl and a rep reassured me that only users who identify as women are allowed access to this bowl. If any men have misrepresented their gender in order to gain access, please flag the user and/or reach out to a bowl leader or Fishbowl support asap! Definitely want to make sure this space remains safe and private so we can continue to share freely 🙏

Hi, I am a single-parent with a 9 year old daughter. Is anyone else dealing with same gender sleepovers with sexual exploration occurring? Exploring as in my daughter says outright “I am going to kiss you,” to her bestie before bed. Then after 15 minutes of giggling in bed I go to tell them to be quiet and see my daughter’s bestie is showing her buttcheeks to my daughter. To top it off they start trying to tell me they are laughing because they are reading “belly laugh books for kids”. Help.

I have taught Pk-2 (full time aides) & SpEd inclusion K-8 with parapros. This will be my first time alone in a classroom of 27 3rd graders. What is your favorite project to do in 3rd??

I don't want people to think I'm just a "diversity hire" because I'm a minority female. Not sure what to do about this. Any input or advice would be appreciated. Thank you

RE has slowed down IMO. Still some work in multifamily and new construction/development (and workouts/restructurings/foreclosures), but hotels, office, retail not doing great at the moment for obvious reasons. Have heard of multiple layoffs, but not mass layoffs yet, and I don’t think we’re going to mass layoffs since this is clearly a temporary pandemic related issue.

Would love to hear from others on what they’re seeing in RE. Please share your geographic market/firm size/relevant info.
