Social media manager is a great way to get into the strategy mix with actual hands-on experience IMO
Start as a CM/SMM
Kindly disagree on that.
I’m a junior strategist and tbh junior strat jobs are extremely rare. Its one of those roles you really need to network to get unfortunately. Ive seen a lot of people get into other departments then transition into strategy. wishing you luck!
This is what I’ve always been told to do when I was in school.
They exist for sure but you’ve gotta know somebody or transfer internally because they tend to be high demand. Start networking with strategists.

Because I was an ass + drunk on my initial response, I hope this makes up for it.
They’re real but they’re hard to come by. Where are you trying to get in/what city are you in?
Currently in NYC, hoping to get into brand / creative strategy.
I think WundermanThompson Seattle has some open. They’re okay with full permanent remote and have been pretty flexible with my different time zone hours. I think the last few hires haven’t been VCU/ad school alums either 😊
I feel like my previous agencies got junior strategists from internships mostly.
Yeah, I second this. I feel like a junior strat role, especially if you’re straight out of college, is extremely rare & hard to get. Everyone I know who started out as a junior strat out of school did so via a summer internship. Most people usually go accounts/brand management > strategy.
Internships are the way to get them
There are just very few roles at that title.
There was just a thread on this somewhere. Some ways to break in as a junior; take an internship that has the opportunity to convert to full time (even if you’re not a student), start in an account or media role and pivot internally, freelance on a project or pitch, start at a research vendor or think tank (a lot of times your clients are agencies or strategists that you can build relationships with), network and have conversations with strategists to find out what they're doing and how you could help. Check out We Are Next, they post junior roles.
